Last week, MassDOT Aeronautics Administrator Denise Garcia sent a letter to Amazon reminding the company that it must undergo a regulatory review process before it can begin operating commercial delivery drones as part of its proposed Amazon Prime Air expansion in Westborough.

The tech industry’s ‘move fast and break things’ ethos cannot override the long-held review and permitting processes we have in the Commonwealth that were established to protect hardworking families and the places they call home.

Whenever Amazon is ready to formalize their proposal and submit to Massachusetts’ air navigation facility permitting process, I will be ready to work with MassDOT and local community members to ensure people’s concerns are addressed.

I offered my congrats to Westborough author Megan Litwin today, who was recognized by the Mass Center for the Book for her children's book Gather Grateful! This whimsical book tells the story of how humans & animals alike gather together for autumn meals & to prepare for winter.

I visited WPI for a Human Edge Studio focused on the future of work in the age of AI. This event brought together students & industry leaders to discuss how AI is changing our workforce & how we can chart a path that ensures AI assists us rather than replaces us in the workplace.

These are big questions, and there is a lot more discussing (and legislating) to do to make sure humans remain at the center of labor. That said, this event was an exciting way to engage the people whose futures the AI revolution is going to affect most – young people.

A huge congrats to Apna Bazar Shrewsbury, which held its official ribbon cutting last week! My District Director Doreen was there to celebrate. Specializing in South Asian cuisine but with products from around the world, this store brings quality ethnic foods to Central MA.

In a nearly unanimous vote, Westborough approved a bylaw to protect their community from the noise, disruption, & privacy violations an unregulated delivery drone operation presents. Amazon has a lot more work to do if they want to fly their drones here. cbsnews.com/boston/news/west…

If drone delivery services come to Massachusetts, all of us will have to deal with the disruptions these noisy 5-foot drones bring whether we use the services or not. We need laws in place before the first drone whizzes overhead.

Our window to regulate drone delivery services is closing – I’m hopeful that the Governor will recognize the urgency of this issue and take these steps so we can draft common-sense policy protecting our communities.
