A new study from the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) analyzed 235 million social media posts alongside retail investor trading data, identifying significant relationships between online sentiment, trading behavior, and investment returns. The research examined: ▫️ 235 million posts across X, Reddit, and Stocktwits ▫️99 publicly traded companies, including 83 based in the U.S. ▫️Four years of data, from 2022 through 2025 ▫️220,000+ observations in its statistical analysis of retail trading outcomes Key findings: ▫️ Positive social sentiment was associated with realized investment gains and increased net selling, suggesting investors may take profits early. ▫️Greater disagreement among investors was associated with realized losses and increased net buying. ▫️Social sentiment showed statistically significant relationships with realized returns across all three platforms. ▫️Message volume alone was not consistently associated with realized returns, reinforcing the importance of understanding sentiment rather than simply counting mentions. The takeaway for IR teams? Retail investor conversations contain measurable signals about trading behavior. Understanding what investors are saying, how sentiment is changing, and where opinions diverge is becoming increasingly relevant to public market intelligence.

Sentinel picked up an interesting narrative split for a major publicly traded company today: -> Sentiment on X: 63% bullish -> Sentiment in financial media: 43% bullish -> Sentiment on Reddit: 56% bearish -> Sentiment in the news: 66% neutral -> Sentiment on YouTube: 75% mixed This is an excellent example of why narrative monitoring is an essential part of any IR toolbox: without the full picture, platform-specific sentiment trends can too easily go unnoticed.

This morning, Sentinel identified that within a peer set of 7 companies in the same industry, the smallest of the four commanded 60% of the retail conversation. Per dollar of market value, the smallest company drew about 36x the conversation of the largest one. Drop your thoughts below. As the IR Lead for the largest company, what would you do next with this knowledge?

Two narratives. Same company. Same week. 197 posts → 14 likes 223 posts → 865 likes Nearly the same mention volume. 62x the engagement. The difference? The first was mostly automated listings. The second was people actually talking about the company. Sentinel data watch.

Faraday Future said the restructuring would reduce dilution and unlock value. Investors read it as strategic drift. FFAI fell 23% in a week. The release is what you control. The narrative is what gets priced. Narrative monitoring for early intervention = an essential piece of the equation.

One post on X. FICO lost roughly a quarter of its market value. On Monday night, FHFA Director Bill Pulte posted that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would move to a single mortgage pricing grid, with VantageScore sitting alongside FICO Classic. FICO opened Tuesday down 20% and traded as much as 27% lower. No earnings release. No 8-K. A post, an interpretation, and a narrative: FICO's hold on mortgage lending is over. That's the position every public company is in now. Something happens, investors decide what it means, and the story travels faster than any official response. A $10 billion company recently told its shareholders that social media moved its numbers. Then cut full-year revenue guidance by roughly $650 million. The commentary spiked in Q1. Investors heard about it on the Q2 call. Sentinel is built so that gap never opens. Detect. Verify. Act.

Most bad narratives don't break. They build. 1) Someone small says it 2) Other people repeat it word for word 3) Someone with reach picks it up 4) It shows up in your inbox Arm your IR team with Sentinel AI first and all four steps are already being watched for you.

Ask ChatGPT about your company. That answer was built from Reddit threads, X replies and Stocktwits posts. Not your filings. Retail forms a view before it ever reaches your IR page. Sentinel shows you that view while it is still forming. sentinel.inc
