Mr. President you of all people should stop stoking the flames of racial division. I am Black and I was elected to represent a majority White state house district in deep red Oklahoma. My colleagues in the State House (majority white) chose me to serve as the leader of that body and I was the youngest Speaker of the House in Oklahoma history. I didnβt need a racially gerrymandered district to accomplish any of that. But Iβm a Republican, so my story doesnβt exactly fit your narrative.
Todayβs Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of βpartisanshipβ rather than explicit βracial bias.β And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach.
The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - notΒ just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.

I wasnβt happy when Clinton, Obama or Biden won, but I didnβt call them fascist/dangerous/threat to democracy. I didnβt hope someone would assassinate them. I went on with my life with gratitude. Friends on the left, please try this. Your life and our country will be better.
