You’re both right. I think what Setha’s trying to say is that sub 3 is more glamorised in SA than internationally. In SA you’re seen as an elite/sub elite whereas internationally you’re on the fast end, but not yet seen as elite of any sort…

Nah the altitude and hills in Johannesburg <<<<
Sub-3-hour marathons among international men and sub-3:30-hour marathons among the women seem to be almost the norm, and are achieved with relative ease. Does this mean that, as South Africans, we are simply slower, or do our conditions make it more hard to run these times?

I don`t quite have the words for it but the biggest factor could be our heavy bias towards Comrades.

Their routes are very flat and they don’t have many ultras so their focus is almost always to improve their 42k time

Garmin says its runners average 9:21/mile for men and 10:11/mile for women. Then I scroll Strava and see somebody calling 7:30 pace "recovery." What's your actual easy pace? The one where you can talk without gasping.

There's so much potential and very talented athletes, our problem is that almost everything is centered around those two Ultras, if you wanna dominate short to medium distance profiles you gotta stay far away from those Ultras

Ehhh ? Lucky is a top top runner yazi 🀯πŸ”₯. This is amazing dude
In June, I ran 66km celebrating my late father’s birthday. He had just turned 66. I remember how difficult this run was, especially after the 50th kilometre. I am yet to commence with β€œComrades” training. I know that I need to unlock monster mentality for a silver medal. Scary!πŸ₯²
