The Royal Canadian Legion is honoured to present Mrs. Virginia Hicks, from the community of Frankford, Ontario, as this year’s National Silver Cross Mother. On November 11, she will place a wreath at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. “Her presence on behalf of all mothers is so incredibly meaningful,” says Sharon McKeown, Dominion President. “In sharing her daughter’s story, we are all reminded with deep gratitude, of the incredible sacrifice of those who give their lives in service to our country. We will remember her.” Mrs. Hicks’ daughter, Sapper Mariebeth Short served with 2 Combat Engineering Regiment, based in Petawawa, Ontario. Born on January 23, 1980, in Comox, British Columbia, she grew up in a family with a history of military service – including that of her mother. Mariebeth was killed on September 23, 2002, during a training exercise on the Matawa Plains in Petawawa. The exercise was a recap, a part of the overall intensive training the Sappers completed to learn everything possible about LAVs (light armoured vehicles). The vehicle she was traveling in that day rolled, and she did not survive. legion.ca/news/articles/2026…

The 2026 Poppy Campaign is here! And there's no better way to mark the occasion than seeing the Poppy Drop display cascade down the Senate building. From October 24 - November 11, digital Poppies will cascade down the Senate building to honour the fallen who fought for our freedom. The virtual wall of honour will also be displayed on one of the Senate's columns. The display will run every evening from 6:30 - 9:30 pm ET except for November 10th and 11th, when they will run until midnight ET.

NEW TODAY: The Ford government plans to spend billions more this year — but not on sectors that say they desperately need it, like health care and education. Ontario’s fall economic statement sets aside $3.8 billion in a contingency fund, more than double what was budgeted in March, to provide "fiscal flexibility" amid ongoing economic uncertainty. The province is also projecting a $16.9 billion deficit, and has pushed back its timeline to balance the books.

Educating young Canadians about the service and sacrifices of our Veterans is an important part of the Legion’s mission. We love seeing initiatives like the @ttctransit Remembrance campaign that bring Veterans and youth together, sharing stories, building understanding and ensuring their experiences are never forgotten. When young people hear these stories firsthand, the importance of Remembrance takes on a whole new meaning. Thank you to the TTC for helping inspire the next generation to Remember. Ontario’s hallway health care numbers have hit unprecedented highs: On an average day in Jan 2025, Ontario hospitals treated 2,088 patients in hallways, break rooms and other spaces never meant for care. It was the most since Ontario Health began tracking the number in 2017 and 52 per cent more than January 2018, the winter before Doug Ford won a majority government promising to end hallway health care. "Can you explain why this member is getting a promotion after he ripped off the people of this province?" On the first day of the fall sitting, Premier Ford dodges questions about why Stan Cho, who resigned from cabinet this summer after charging taxpayers for local hotel stays, has been promoted to an education role with a $22K pay bump.

Pope Leo XIV highlights how peace must become once again the "guiding star for all our choices," in a video message to the participants in the International Meeting "Unarmed and Disarming Peace" in Assisi. Forty years ago, Pope St. John Paul II had gathered religious representatives in the Italian town to pray for peace. "Precisely in these times marked by a 'culture of power,'" Pope Leo continued, "there is a need to cultivate the spirit of Assisi, which entails a rejection of the religious justification of war, a spirit of mediation and dialogue, and contemplative reflection combined with creative action in the service of a future of peace."

Our thoughts are with all members of the Canadian Armed Forces and the families impacted by the tragic fire at CFB Wainwright. We stand with the military community as they navigate this profound loss, and we honour the lives impacted by this tragedy.
