Very excited to share this beautiful story by @ShailabShrestha describing his surprising discovery that cell division in C. difficile occurs via a mechanism distinct from previously characterized bacteria. Done in collaboration with the amazing @SGribaldo & Najwa Taib. 1/9
So excited to finally share this work!!
We found an unexpected repurposing of canonical division enzymes during the evolution of endospore formation and some surprisingly unique aspects of cell division in C. difficile.

@felixrl_ took on a ~50-yr-old mystery in #Staph aureus cell biology and came out on top! Check out his paper on how #Staphylococcus aureus chooses its cell division plane, how it forms clusters, and why all this matters during infection...

Excited to share our recent pre-print! The Vibrio cholerae encoded Nezha anti-phage system (SIR2-HerA) restricts virulent vibriophages ICP1, ICP2, and ICP3 by depleting NAD+ (Abi💀). However, an ICP1 isolate can overcome this by encoding putative NAD+ regenerating proteins! ⚡️

What a thread from @mfgrp . I can go into all the ways I have fallen short here, and also (luckily) where serendipity helps and can be an important driver of project choice.

If there was only one scientific practice I could teach to every scientist regardless of stage or field I think it would be: look at the data. Spot check it. Find a few data points and trace them through to see if they make sense. Look at the raw data. Don't just do analyses.
Excited that @twistedbacteria, Editor @NatureComms, highlighted @shailabshrestha's finding that C. difficile (and other clostridial organisms?) mediate division in the absence of FtsW-FtsI homologs. In collaboration with @sgribaldo and Najwa Taib nature.com/collections/jedgc…
