Israel’s votes are almost all counted, and no bloc has 61. What happens now? 🏛️
With about 90% counted: Netanyahu’s bloc has 53 seats, Eisenkot’s bloc has 48, and the two predominantly Arab parties have a record 19. Likud is the largest party with 26 seats, followed by Eisenkot’s Yashar with 21. 61 of 120 are needed.
Here’s how Israel gets from here to a government:
1️⃣ Official results: The final results must be announced within nine days of the vote.
2️⃣ The president consults: Within seven days of the official results, President Herzog meets the party heads, and each recommends a candidate for prime minister.
3️⃣ The mandate: He tasks the lawmaker he believes has the best chance of forming a government, who is not necessarily the leader of the largest party.
4️⃣ The clock: 28 days to build a coalition, with a possible 14-day extension.
5️⃣ If that fails: a second candidate gets 28 days, and then 61 members can ask the president to task a third. If that fails too, the Knesset dissolves and Israel heads back to elections.
What makes this round harder? With neither side at 61, the Arab parties’ 19 seats put them in a potential kingmaker position, and analysts say leaders face two options either a unity government or another election within months. Meanwhile, the caretaker government stays in power.
