So, 31 years ago tonight, neighbors found my father-in-law underneath the header of his combine near Sinai, South Dakota. They had driven by and realized the combine was still sitting in the same spot it had been in the previous hour, with its light still on. A lot of things changed in Sinai after that terrible evening: family members were missing their son, others were missing their father, and one was missing her husband. Elderly neighbors he had watched over and checked in on were now without that guy. I was in the combine the other night, doing the math and realizing he was 51 when he passed. I thought that was old at the time. But as I now look in my life's rearview mirror, 51 was four years ago for me. I admit this isn't like my usual flashback Friday posts, but I would like to end it by saying the following. Death is the end of all men, and reflecting on it helps the living take wisdom to heart. Good day.

The internet bandwidth capabilities at Iowa's swankiest lake houses are undergoing an apocalyptic stress test as farmers rush to rebut this outlandish statement.
New from @IAFieldReport: Iowa Democrat Chris Jones says farming "isn't that hard" and says Iowa farmers are "only working a few weeks out of the year."
This is on video. This is who wants to be Iowa's Secretary of Agriculture. 👇 #iapolitics
Sitting around this Summer? Can’t find a full time job because Save U More won’t hire a 12 year old. We got a solution! Come out to the farm and earn $3 dollars an hour sitting on your bum. Experience 95 degrees in full sunlight ,while spraying industrial strength farm chemicals, all while just wearing your shorts and tennis shoes! Feel the exhilaration of sitting on a fiberglass seat bolted to the front of an antique farm tractor being driven by your best friend’s elderly uncle with heart problems. And don’t forget your water jugs! And that’s sums up 1984 in today’s flashback Friday. Also here’s to all the then teenagers that made it possible, because I couldn’t see it happening nowadays! Good times ..and good day to you all
While some associate June with dairy or Pride events, I reflect on past June’s being the last major mechanical battle with weeds. Pictured here is a 1984 International 5088 tractor outfitted with an 8-row cultivar.
Does anybody know is that a Hiniker? . The most memorable part of learning to cultivate was is the verbal beatings from my father telling me how to navigating the rows without running over the damn corn! The big moment would come and he’d get his butt out of the tractor and leave you in peace. This moment signified a milestone and it felt like you were about to solo at 747. With Z98 playing loud on the radio, I'd focus on the culti-vision mirror to maintain my path, occasionally stopping to pick rocks and enjoy a blast of hot air from the reversed fan blowing hot air out of the grill from these tractors. Then you would turn around at the headlands and realized the path of destruction you just left from your previous pass. Some corn leaning left, some leaning right and some permanently removed from the face of the Earth forever. Dad eventually would come back out and say maybe next year Kid you’ll be better. And the guy in this picture…you could say he’s my accountant. Good day to you all

🚨 An Indiana solar farm was destroyed on Tuesday as severe storms tore through the area
This picture was taken on Thursday this past week during the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo. They are intentively viewing a live feed from Pierre. To put it bluntly the stock show is probably the second most attended event in South Dakota after the Sturgis motorcycle rally. Probably one of the biggest bills dealing with the direction of the future of the state was taken place in Pierre on the same day. HB1077 . Consider a cultivated-protein food product to be adulterated food. I hope you all realize what’s at stake here. I will post the links to the House and Senate hearings below. It’s all in the hands of the Governor now. Good day
It's been a while since my last Flashback Friday post. I came across this picture of my dad pushing snow using a narrow front with a climate control cab. He would be celebrating his 98th birthday if he were alive today. Good day.
Initially, I did not plan on posting today, but a recent local news story warrants my attention. So in today’s thoughs from the combine I would also like to acknowledge my sole remaining sponsor, following the receipt of cease and desist letters from my other sponsors' attorneys. Alec Baldwin's school of driving and gun safety will soon offer online classes. This post has led me to reflect on my friend, a downtown business maintenance guy, for over 30 years. I regret not documenting the numerous stories he shared about public restroom experiences, which he recounted to my children over evening dinner table for the past 25 years. These real-life events are more disturbing than Stephen King novels, featuring incidents such as toilets clogged with bar rags, cell phones, and other items, as well as toilets that fail to flush, yet people continue to use them. I believe he has a collection of mementos from these incidents. It is unclear who would dispose of 140 empty mini bottles by flushing them down the toilet. There should also be a sign above every urinal to remind everybody that the person picking the cigarette butts out of the drain is the same hand mixing your drinks. If I was the great Oz, I would give every bar owner a medal for their courage. Good day.
A bar in Yankton is facing an unusual dilemma - over 140 Fireball shooters were found in their plumbing, causing the business to close for over three days.

After a friend of a friend discovered a vehicle in his cornfield while harvesting silage, containing four dead bodies, I exercise caution when approaching similar vehicles in my field.

🚨BREAKING: Christian author Frank Turek was in the car with Charlie Kirk & explains what happened immediately after Charlie Kirk was assassinated.
Today has turned into one of those days. You will remember your location, what you were doing , and how you heard the news. But mostly you will remember the impact it had on you. I have nothing further to say. Good day.
For the record, I am the individual featured in the Snapchat videos, chasing the escape steer in downtown Yankton this morning. Thanks to the combined efforts of the YPD and several other individuals, including and mostly Bob Ryken, we managed to corner the steer against a building and secure it. During the incident, I observed a group of children from a nearby daycare, likely at the eighth Street clothing store, watching the scene unfold from outside. For a moment, I feared the situation might escalate into something similar to the Napoleon Dynamite scene with the school bus. As an elderly German preacher once told me, God sometimes watches over small children and idiots. Some days you’re the idiot. Good Day.

I am going to go on a rant here, and call out the plank in my own eye as a rancher.
A wealthy businessman has been buying run-down cattle ranches in my area. He then gets NRCS money to pay for improvements like wells, water troughs, pipelines and fences. Then he sells the ranches at a nice profit.
NRCS is paying for a new well, 10,000 gallons of storage and a rubber tired watering trough. He paid me to install the trough.
When I got there, I tasted the water out of curiosity, because much of the aquifer in this area is very salty. The water from is well is the saltiest I have ever tasted. Just like water in Great Salt Lake. Neither cow nor wild animal will ever drink this water.
I called the owner and informed him of this so he could plan appropriately before spending a lot of money on a wasted project. He told me that the project needs to be complete for him to get the NRCS reimbursement, and told me to finish it.
There will be a solar array, a solar pump, 10,000 gallon polyethene storages, and a tire trough put in at taxpayer expense for nothing. When he sells the ranch, I expect he will not inform the buyer that the water in this site is bad, and someone is likely to get scammed. .
Ripping off the taxpayers like this for profit is the kind of thing that gives the rest of us a bad rap.
This man is not a rancher, he is a con man, ripping off government programs designed to help ranches be more sustainable. And he is not the only one.
