Absolutely insane set of circumstances at the Mexico Open:
Nick Hardy made about half a million dollars today. (Stick with me)
Hardy got into the field today as the 3rd alternate. The first two alternates weren't on site, so when Taylor Moore WD'd with an injury, Nick was in.
Last night, some players encouraged Hardy to make the trip, knowing the first two alternates weren't there. Nick immediately found a flight and arrived in Mexico early yesterday afternoon.
Hardy has struggled the last few years and only has past champion status. This season he had made 14 starts, made 4 cuts and is 193rd in points.
So how did getting into today's field potentially earn him roughly half a million dollars?
It was his 15th start of the season, which counts as a full season under the PGA Tour's retirement plan.
And here's the important part: It was his FIFTH qualifying season.
That means Hardy has now reached the vesting requirement for the cuts-made portion of the Tour's retirement plan.
Under that plan, players accumulate retirement credits for cuts made throughout their careers. Based on Hardy's 67 career cuts and the plan's historical payout structure, the amount could be worth roughly $400,000 or more.
Barring a Monday Q in one of the final few events, Hardy would have fallen one start short. And with his recent struggles, there was no guarantee he'd get 15 starts again next season.
Man, he had to be ecstatic when that phone rang today letting him know he was in the field.

Made yardage books for my players using @ShotPattern tonight - remarkably easy!!! Impressed by the details and amount of info it contains, think this will help them navigate a course they’ve never seen before the state finals.
@ me next time, coach!! 🤣
Honestly so great seeing the pro version of what I’m working on posted on social right after a lesson. Free bonus content!
Highly recommend working with @Nickolgolf! Matchup based coach > swing template coach.

Course management is very simple if you understand your dispersion pattern.
Psychological strength can come from the confidence you have in your ability to hit the golf shot you want
It’s pretty hard to be confident if you’re off for 22 handicap and you hit the ball sideways all the time
There’s just no proof that you can hit the shots required
So get really good at controlling your golf ball and then you’ll be confident
Fun look to give yourself an idea of how certain holes at Medinah #3 would play for you!
All the dots are based on his actual shot data, not guesses.
Just for giggles, from the “how would a normal golfer fare on these holes?”, here is my shot dispersion overlaid on some of the key holes at Medinah this week

Human Announcer whispers:
“209 yards. Into a slight breeze off the right. This is a 5-iron.”
AI extraordinaire @duffforemangolf (5 seconds later after the ball has come to a stop on the green):
“I’ve crunched the numbers, and I don’t like his odds to hole this shot.”
This is just so bad.
I have to assume this was spun up by someone who's never used AI in any sort of productive manner and still sees it as some sort of gimmick.
If you want to use AI to improve the broadcast, use it to research ahead of time and serve up interesting stories to the human announcers in real time so they can build drama around each player’s narrative.
I’m embarrassed for whoever forced this through and I feel bad for those in the room who I’m sure tried to push back on letting this out the door only to be told it was happening anyway.
Who’s going to create the AI avatar that lures Duff into romantic controversy so that he has to step away from announcing for “personal reasons” after deep reflection and conversations with his AI family?
It’s a great start to the weekend!
Updated print from home yardage books with vertical flip/fold, carry and roll out numbers, elevation changes, and more!
309-yard Hole in One… with a 7-wood!! With a strokes gained value of over 3 strokes gained, it’s the best shot ever recorded in the 3.5 year history of the app. Congrats, Mike, on your first ever hole in one! What a way to do it.
(And yes - there are multiple witnesses).
