We thank the UN Committee Against Torture for highlighting the case of political prisoner Idris Khattak in its Concluding Observations on Pakistan. Idris was disappeared, tortured, and sentenced to 14 years in prison as punishment for his human rights work. Freedom House is actively working to secure his release through the Fred Hiatt Program to Free Political Prisoners #FreeThemAll ohchr.org/en/press-releases/…

As the High-Level EU-Pakistan Business Forum begins, we urge the participants to stand up for human rights and push the government of Pakistan to release political prisoners, including human rights defender Idris Khattak. Pakistan's GSP+ status – which grants preferential access to EU markets – requires implementing the core international human rights treaties, and detaining Idris Khattak and others on fabricated charges is incompatible with these treaties. Freedom House’s #FreeThemAll program has adopted Idris's case and we will continue to fight for his release until he is finally freed.

We echo the concerns of the UN human rights experts regarding the life-threatening health risks that Pakistani political prisoner Idris Khattak is facing in prison and reiterate our call for his immediate and unconditional release. Khattak, who has been unjustly detained for over six years, does not have a consistent supply of essential medications, nor has he received adequate medical care to treat his diabetes, high blood pressure, and dental infection. ohchr.org/en/press-releases/…

This International Human Rights Day, I’m thinking of innocent people sitting in jail cells around the world like Jimmy Lai, Dang Dinh Bach, Selahattin Demirtas, Gubad Ibadoghlu and Idris Khattak. Authoritarian governments are jailing people for thought crimes. Democratic governments and movements must fight to get them out.

Freedom House commends the recent opinion of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) finding that the detention of Pakistani human rights defender Idris Khattak violates international law, and calls on the Pakistani government to release Khattak without delay. Khattak has remained imprisoned for more than half a decade for his efforts to defend Pakistan’s Pashtun ethnic minority from persecution. freedomhouse.org/article/fre…

Idris Khattak’s only “offence” was defending the most vulnerable in #Pakistan. For that, he was disappeared, denied due process, and silenced through a military trial designed to eliminate scrutiny. 1/2 @mjdawar @marvisirmed @NJLahori #ReleaseIdrisKhattak

We are deeply concerned to learn that the family of human rights defender Idris Khattak was denied a prison visit to hand over key medications needed for his several health conditions. All prisoners have a right to family visits, and the denial of required medication can constitute torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. @PakinUSA
Imprisoned rights defender Idris Khattak has dedicated his life to defending the rights of Pakistan’s most vulnerable people. We are proud to file a petition with @UN_HRC to rule his detention arbitrary and unlawful. Full statement: freedomhouse.org/article/fre…

On Tuesday, my sister was denied a visit with our father—even after traveling four hours and then waiting over three hours with two toddlers. Not only was the visit denied without explanation, but the medication and painkillers she brought for him were also refused. These are medications crucial for managing his diabetes and nerve damage. If we are not allowed to bring him the medicine he urgently needs, then at the very least, the prison should be responsible for providing it. No one should be denied basic healthcare. The constantly shifting rules, often changed without notice, leave us feeling so small and helpless. My sister broke down in the waiting area after hours of waiting, in the empty hall after families who were allowed to see their loved ones had already left and she was kept waiting.

Today was papas birthday. Each year, we’d get him a chocolate cake, a gift & we’d sing Happy Birthday. It’s been 5 years that he spends this day in prison, lonely, without family. The man who’d bring happiness to all now sits alone. My heart hurts immensely. #ReleaseIdrisKhattak
