Can an Implant Lower Blood Sugar With Electricity? Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a small electronic implant that could offer a new way to manage type 2 diabetes. The device, called ECHO, uses an electrically powered catalyst to convert excess glucose into gluconate, which the body can remove through urine. It also works with a glucose monitor and smartphone, allowing it to switch on when blood sugar rises and off when levels return to the target range. In tests with diabetic mice, blood sugar returned to normal levels within about an hour. The mice also lost weight during a six-week study. The results are promising, but there's still a long way to go. The implant hasn't been tested in humans, and researchers need to establish whether it's safe and effective for people.
