If you ever want to see how over-engineered Cold War American aircraft truly were, look at the photograph of Boeing B-52H Stratofortress tail number 61-0023 flying over New Mexico with its entire vertical tail fin missing.
That photograph is not a computer trick; it was taken by an Air Force chase plane at sixteen thousand feet on January 10, 1964.
Test pilot Chuck Fisher and a civilian Boeing crew were flying low over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado to test how the giant eight-engine bomber handled low-altitude turbulence.
In clear blue sky, an invisible mountain wave of violent air slammed the bomber with forces stronger than a hurricane.
With a sound like a cannon shot, the forty-foot-tall vertical stabilizer and rudder snapped clean off the back of the fuselage.
Eighty-three percent of the tail fin vanished into the clouds behind them, leaving only a jagged five-foot metal stump.
Without a vertical tail fin, almost any airplane on earth will immediately yaw sideways, roll inverted, and spin into the ground.
Why did this four-hundred-thousand-pound bomber stay in the air?
Because Fisher refused to panic, and the Boeing engineers sitting behind him immediately went to work calculating how to invent a new rudder in mid-air.
With zero rudder control, the bomber's nose fishtailed wildly across the sky.
Calling Boeing engineers in Wichita on the radio, the crew came up with a brilliant mechanical fix: they lowered only the rear pair of main landing wheels under the belly of the aircraft.
Hanging down in the slipstream behind the bomber's center of gravity, those heavy rubber tires acted like sea anchors on the back of a boat, pulling the tail straight and stopping the fishtailing.
To turn the giant aircraft without a rudder, Fisher adjusted the throttles on the eight Pratt and Whitney turbofan engines under the wings, using engine thrust to steer left and right.
For five straight hours across three states, Fisher nursed the tailless giant through the sky until he greased all eight wheels onto the long runway at Blytheville Air Force Base in Arkansas.
Every man walked off the plane unharmed, and after mechanics bolted a new tail fin onto 61-0023, that same B-52 flew for the United States Air Force for another forty-four years.

Έξαλλη είμαι με τα ορκ που ξεχύθηκαν να αποδώσουν ευθύνες στη γυναίκα του πιλοτηρίου (που τελικά ΔΕΝ ήταν πιλότος). Και δε μου λέτε ρε μαγκες, σε ποιον θα δίνατε το δίχρονο παιδί σας να το μεταφέρει με αυτοκίνητο, σε έναν άντρα 20 ετών ή μία γυναίκα 20 ετών;

Low time pilots are paired with high time pilots. That’s been the concept for years. She might be 20 but she passed her training, testing and got her type rating so she was qualified to fly the aircraft. You might not like that but that’s how it’s done.

I don't think it's about being a woman-it's about being a 20 year old woman with less than 3 years of experience. It is like giving the keys of a Lambo to a 16 year old-asking for trouble. I just think commercial flying should require more experience.

The female co pilot could've simply screamed the entire way down and it would've been valid. The fact she stayed calm enough to relay ANY information in that situation shows how courageous she was. The ATC saying “I'm here with you, whatever you need.” They both knew.

I work in aviation so this morning I got to sit around with a bunch of pilots and discuss this horrible situation and I found it so interesting that none of the pilots thought the gender or race of the pilots were a factor at all but a bunch of fucking idiots on here do.

As a former Marine and police officer, I’ve seen people freeze or fall apart under pressure. I listened to 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha on Learjet N722BD as it dove at over 20,000 feet per minute in an overspeed. She never stopped transmitting clear, critical information even though she had to know she was going to die. That young co-pilot stayed on the radio to the end. Most people twice her age wouldn’t have.
