This has been always like this. Nsfw accounts doesn't show on the "for you" tab to strangers, only your followers. Nsfw accounts always depended on retweets rather than appearing in trendings like sfw or "softcore nsfw" accounts do, who can reach easily 50k+ likes on posts.

All this hysteria and people nuking their accounts and starting over and will ultimately get the markers immediately again with the same posting behaviour.
This isn’t new, it’s always been this way since the days of the blue bird; I’ve had the toggle ‘mark posts as may contain sensitive media’ turned on manually for years. It hasn’t impacted my reach, hasn’t hurt my discovery. It just hides blatantly NSFW adult content from accounts without a verified age, or their preferences set to not see adult/sensitive content. People have a right to try and manage the content they see on their timeline.
By moving to a new account. You’re only massively impacting your reach just to skirt an forcibly applied content marker you should’ve turned on in the first place if you’re posting adult/sensitive content, and you’ll quickly get it applied to your new account if you post on that account with it toggled off again.
If you toggle it on while posting sensitive media, then toggle it off for your SFW posts, you’ll see improved reach, and the ability to choose remains if you use it responsibly.

People are freaking out about NSFW. I started this page in 2020—before X—and actually read the ToS. The rule hasn't changed: you could never run an exclusively adult account. You always needed regular posts alongside manual warnings to avoid penalties.

Alright... let's clear this up.
I've been seeing a lot of people worried about NSFW accounts getting "shadowbanned" or losing engagement lately, so I want to put some things in perspective.
Nothing new is happening. This has been around for years. I've been studying the algorithm since 2024, and the behavior is the same.
Twitter has never promoted NSFW content by default. NSFW accounts naturally have a harder time getting reach because the platform keeps that content more contained (basically in a bubble). That's by design.
What actually happens to most NSFW accounts isn't a classic shadowban. It's usually a search ban, which is different. This happens because an NSFW label gets applied to your account. The label lasts about 7 days and then goes away (unless you keep posting NSFW frequently, in which case it renews).
So what changed?
The main difference now is transparency. In August 2026, Twitter open-sourced parts of the algorithm code. Before, this system was mostly hidden. Now people can actually see how it works, which is why so many are noticing it and talking about it again.
I've checked my own account many times over the years. I've never been truly shadowbanned. I've only gotten the temporary search ban when I post NSFW, and it clears when I stop.
So no, Twitter isn't randomly fucking up your engagement with some new update. This is the same system as before, it's just more visible now.
