The proposed Cape Fria Harbour has the potential to usher in a new era of economic development for Namibia, as it aims to establish the Kunene Region as a hub for logistics, tourism and investment.
Kunene Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua says Cape Fria presents an opportunity for Namibia to develop a new harbour in the post-independence era, fulfilling a vision previously held by the country’s Founding President and now receiving renewed attention under the 8th Administration.
Muharukua says the project could strengthen Namibia’s competitiveness as a logistics gateway to Southern Africa and the continent, supported by existing road infrastructure and opportunities in fishing, critical minerals and tourism.
He believes the harbour could attract investment, create employment and enable local communities to participate in major economic sectors, while supporting the development of a modern smart city.
Muharukua has called on stakeholders to work together to turn the long-held vision into reality, stressing that its benefits should extend beyond Kunene to the entire country.

So someone calls for an Ambulance while in Uuvudhiya, a road ambulance takes an 1h30 to get there, then has to drive back to the nearest landing strip (Oshakati maybe), then they'll be flown to Windhoek coz the procedure can't be done in Oshakati? That time the jet is in KM.
Namibia has officially inaugurated its first-ever state-owned air ambulance service, marking a major step towards strengthening emergency medical response and improving access to specialised healthcare.
The service features a fully equipped Learjet air ambulance, registered as V5-NAG, which functions as an intensive care unit in the air, as well as helicopter evacuation services for emergencies in remote areas.
The service is expected to complement the existing ground ambulance fleet.
The inauguration also included the handover of the air ambulance operating licence from the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to Government Air Transport Services (GATS).
Speaking at the launch, Vice President Lucia Witbooi said the service would connect patients in remote communities to advanced medical care at intermediate and national referral hospitals, reducing journeys that could take hours by road to significantly shorter travel times by air.
She said the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring that patients’ chances of survival are not determined by their geographical location or distance from a hospital.
Minister of Health and Social Services Dr Esperance Luvindao described the service as a milestone in strengthening the country’s healthcare system, noting that it would prioritise critically ill patients requiring urgent, time-sensitive specialist care where road transport is unsuitable.
Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi also welcomed the initiative, commending the Ministry of Health and Social Services for its leadership and the Ministry of Finance for facilitating the timely transfer of funds.
The vice president emphasised that the success of the service would ultimately be measured by the lives saved, rather than by the number of aircraft or flights.
