SALARY NOT SLAYING:
How Nigerian Workers Now Use Salary To Pay Debts Only
Gone are the days when salary was for enjoyment. Today, salary is just for debt settlement.
Investigation by All civil servants in Nigeria shows that many workers receive alert on the 28th and by 30th, the money is gone. Not because they lavished it, but because they used it to service loans.
Here is the reality:
Before salary comes, loan apps have already sent reminder messages. Cooperative deduction has already been calculated at source. Bank loan, salary advance, thrift contribution, ajo, school fees loan, foodstuff on credit from office colleague, all waiting.
One civil servant in Abuja on Level 08 told us:
My take home is N158,000. Cooperative takes N45,000. Bank loan N30,000. Loan app N25,000. I borrowed N20,000 from my colleague last month to fuel my car. I am left with less than N38,000 to feed a family of four for 30 days.
Another female worker in a federal ministry said she borrows transport money to come to work in the first week after salary.
Why are workers trapped in debt?
1. Fuel now N1200 to N1,500 per litre depending on location
2. House rent now takes 70 percent of annual salary in Abuja and Lagos
3. School fees increased by over 100 percent
4. Cost of food - a bag of rice now N80,000 to N95,000
5. N70,000 minimum wage cannot even buy one bag of rice
The new trend is Borrow to Work, Work to Pay Debt.
Many workers now live from hand to mouth. Some trek to work. Some skip lunch. Some sleep in office to save transport.
This is not laziness. This is a wage that cannot meet basic needs.
Nigerian workers do not need palliatives of rice and indomie. They need a living wage that can take them home.
Question:How much remains from your salary after you settle debts?

@JoeAjaero2 @NLCHeadquarters β HOW MANY MORE WORKERS MUST DIE BEFORE LABOUR WAKES UP?
Comrade Joe Ajaero and the Nigeria Labour Congress, what exactly is the Nigerian worker supposed to do to survive this economy?
I have lost five friends to the hardship and pressures of these times. FIVE. These were human beings with families, responsibilities and hopes for a better life. Behind every struggling civil servant is a story of silent suffering that the public may never hear.
How does a worker earning β¦70,000 survive when food, transportation, electricity, rent and medication have become unaffordable? What is left after the bills? What dignity remains when a person works all month and still cannot meet basic needs?
Workers are breaking down under financial pressure. Families are under strain. People are losing hope. Yet the response from organised labour, in the eyes of many struggling workers, has been far too slow and insufficient for the scale of this emergency.
The NLC was not established merely to issue statements when workers are threatened. It exists to defend workers when their livelihoods and dignity are under attack.
Where is the sustained, urgent pressure for living wages, meaningful salary reviews, affordable transportation, reliable electricity and real protection for ordinary workers? Where is the relentless mobilisation that should accompany a crisis of this magnitude?
A minimum wage on paper means very little if it cannot sustain a human being. Workers should not have to choose between feeding their families, travelling to work and obtaining basic medical care.
Comrade Ajaero, labour leadership must be measured not only by speeches and declarations but by tangible improvements in workers' lives. Nigerian workers need urgency, accountability and a clear action planβnot endless patience while their purchasing power disappears.
I am not speaking from a comfortable distance. I have watched people suffer, and I have lost five friends. Their loss is a painful reminder that this crisis is not just about economic statistics. It is about human lives.
How many more families must mourn before the urgency of this crisis is reflected in labour's response?
The NLC must rise to this moment. Publish a clear programme of action, mobilise workers and demand policies that make survival possible. Do not allow the ordinary Nigerian worker to feel abandoned by the very institution established to defend them.
Workers are not disposable. Their lives matter. Their families matter. Their labour matters.
ENOUGH OF NORMALISING SURVIVAL AS A PRIVILEGE. NIGERIAN WORKERS DESERVE TO LIVE, NOT MERELY EXIST.

Iβm ready for anything. Nigerians are suffering, and we canβt keep quiet anymore. If this is the end, so be it.β
β HE Peter Obi
This is not ordinary talk. This is the sound of a man who has watched Nigerians suffer for too long and has decided that silence is no longer acceptable.
While people struggle with hunger, insecurity, and a system that keeps failing them, some leaders still pretend everything is fine. Peter Obi is saying the opposite: enough is enough. The suffering is real, the pain is visible, and continuing to keep quiet only makes it worse.
His readiness is not about drama. It is about commitment. If defending the votes of Nigerians, demanding accountability, and pushing for a better country comes with risk, then so be it. The alternative more years of the same hardship is already a slow form of ending for millions.

As the First Lady visits Edo State tomorrow to meet our women, we must ask: what is the real condition of the people she is coming to meet?
Across Edo, families are battling hunger, rising food prices, unemployment and crushing living costs. Young graduates roam the streets without jobs, small businesses struggle to survive, roads are deplorable, and unreliable electricity makes life unbearable. For many households, putting food on the table has become a daily battle.
Our mothers deserve more than ceremonies, speeches, gifts and photographs. They deserve jobs, affordable food, good roads, reliable electricity and opportunities to live with dignity.
Obidients and NDC members should encourage our mothers to look beyond the glamour and ask the hard questions: What concrete solutions will improve their lives after the cameras are gone?
Edo needs lasting solutions, not temporary spectacles. Leadership should be measured by how many families are lifted out of poverty, not by the crowd gathered to welcome a visitor.
Hunger has no political party. Poverty respects no title. Our people deserve better.

OPEN LETTER TO @NLCHeadquarters AND JOE AJAERO
What is the purpose of a β¦70,000 minimum wage when civil servants struggle to afford transport to work, pay rent, feed their families and educate their children?
Workers are sinking into debt, battling unbearable hardship and suffering physically and emotionally. Some face desperate circumstances simply trying to survive until payday.
A worker should not have to borrow money to go to work or choose between feeding the family and paying school fees.
@NLCHeadquarters, Comrade Joe Ajaero, where is the urgency? We demand a minimum wage review, immediate cost-of-living relief and a clear timetable for action.
Nigerian workers deserve a living wage, not a monthly struggle for survival. Enough is enough!
