Debt succeeds in delivering a thought-provoking meditation on modern pressures. It taps into a very real anxiety about the cost of “success” and the quiet ways people justify their choices when faced with overwhelming expectations

Just finished the National Book Award listed “North Sun” and wasn’t very impressed. Started strong and then became a magical realism allegory type of book. Don’t know why this is so popular with critics. Not to mention, it had several typos. Do better.

And here I’ve been lamenting how hard it is to get attention from a major publisher while at the same time they are driving away the writers already on their rosters.
For @WIRED, I spoke with Macmillan and PRH staff about AI at the rest of the Big Five.
I also spoke with bestselling authors who've gone to "war" with publishers over AI use and are now demanding disclosures and threatening to leave their publishers altogether.
We’re in the first days of the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos. I very much appreciate any traditions that return our focus to death. People in the modern world often treat death like an aberration, not the constant that it is. It deserves meditation.
My forthcoming novel follows a man as he drifts across America. I don’t like to write about places I’ve never been to, so I visited the parts of West Texas I hadn’t yet laid eyes on and brought a fancy camera with me.
My main character is frequently homeless and has to find random places to bed down at night, so I explore those kinds of places.
The need to problematize everything is akin to the religious compulsion to see sin everywhere. I’m not so sure that righteously standing in judgment of the world is always a best practice.
Just finished the God knows which number final line edit of my upcoming novel. The book, I feel confident saying, is damn good. Maybe even damn fucking good. It’s called Away in the Baby’s Breath, and hopefully it’ll be out next fall.

Local mag did a blurb on Picket Fire. I learned long ago that there will always be tiny factual errors in these things. It’s a minor detail, but the McCarthy book that influenced the press’s name is The Crossing, not The Road.
Woke up during my colonoscopy and was fighting a nurse. I’d been having a dream that I was doing jiu jitsu. On the bright side, my colon is clean AND a nurse told me that I do not look 45, so, good morning overall.
