Due to the government shutdown, Smithsonian museums are temporarily closed beginning on Sunday, Oct. 12, along with our research centers and the National Zoo. We will update our operating status as soon as the situation is resolved. We do not plan to update social media other than to inform you of changes to our operating status. While our doors are closed, Smithsonian digital resources continue to be available at si.edu 📷: @SmithsonianNMAI

You can also explore a digitized model of this hard hat in 3D at: 3d.si.edu/object/3d/hard-hat…
#OTD in 2001, the lives of nearly 3,000 individuals were taken when 4 commercial airliners were hijacked and used as terrorist weapons. In the days after the September 11th attack, the destroyed site of the World Trade Center buildings became known as 'Ground Zero.'

You can also explore this specimen online! 🪸 3d.si.edu/object/3d/primnoa-…
Long before it was 3D scanned, this Primnoa resedaeformis specimen was collected off the coast of Nova Scotia in the late 1800s! This slow-growing, long-lived cold-water coral is found in both sides of the Atlantic and is an indicator of vulnerable marine ecosystems.

In this application we are using sound to convey the depth of the surface of a #3D model under the user's pointer. Moving this pointer across the object results in a change of sound rate or pitch that also conveys the shape of the object along that path. #accessibility
