I got an opportunity to visit a cattle farmer in Fremont, Nebraska. I came to learn about beef farming, but judging by these photos, the cattle also had questions about me! Maybe they were wondering why this visitor was taking pictures instead of bringing feed. Nebraska had 6.15 million cattle and calves on January 1, 2026. That included 1.56 million beef cows, while its 2.8 million cattle on feed placed it first nationally. Those numbers help explain why beef farming is such an important part of life here. But what interests me most is the work behind those numbers. Take ultrasound. Yes, cattle get ultrasounds too! It can detect pregnancy as early as 30 days. It can also help estimate muscle size, fat thickness, and marbling while the animal is alive. That information supports decisions about breeding and beef quality. Then there is digital technology. Sensors can monitor movement and rumination, which is basically chewing cud. Researchers are also developing AI camera systems to recognize cattle behavior and help identify animals that need attention. Imagine getting a notification that says, “Please check cow number 25.” That is the kind of practical support I find exciting. And with winter approaching, I had another question: how do these animals handle the cold? They grow thicker coats and may seek shelter when cold stressed. Nebraska Extension explains that a cow in good condition with a thick, dry coat may need extra energy below about 19°F. With a wet coat, that threshold can rise to 53°F. Dry bedding, wind protection, and enough nutritious feed make a difference. For me, useful technology starts with better understanding farmers’ daily work. It should help them care for animals, make informed decisions, and earn enough to keep farming.
