The so-called “opposition” leaders are making noise about the Home Education Bill while silencing grassroots members who speak out against the Ras Malé deal. The government and opposition leadership appear politically coordinated, publicly disagreeing over individual bills while overlooking a broader agenda that could attract Zionist-linked investors and settlers. Legislative amendments and proposed laws since 2024 appear designed to establish a legal framework favourable to residence-by-investment programmes marketed by firms such as Henley & Partners. The proposed Penal Code and Home Education bills could also provide legal protections for future non-Muslim settlers in the event of conflicts with Maldivians and facilitate overseas homeschooling arrangements. The opposition leadership is making noise about individual issues while ignoring the bigger picture fighting over the branches while refusing to question the roots, merely to maintain the appearance of opposition.
