کیا پاکستان آرمی میں اب کوئی ’’باسٹرڈ ود بالز" باقی بچا ہے؟ جنرل وحید کاکڑ اور وہ کور کمانڈر جس نے سچ بولنے کی ہمت کی جنرل وحید کاکڑ شکار کے شوقین تھے۔ آرمی چیف کی حیثیت سے وہ ایک بار بلوچستان گئے۔ وہاں کے کور کمانڈر ایک گہرے مذہبی افسر تھے (جنہیں اکثر ’’مولوی صاحب‘‘ کہا جاتا تھا)۔ گاڑیوں میں شکار کا سامان اور دانہ دُنکا بھر کر رکھا گیا تھا، اور کور کمانڈر خود چیف کے ساتھ سفر کر رہے تھے۔ موقع غنیمت جانتے ہوئے کور کمانڈر نے چیف سے کہا: ’’سر، مائنڈ نہ کریں، مگر جب بھی آپ تشریف لاتے ہیں تو ہمیں شکار کا انتظام کرنا پڑتا ہے۔ وسائل بھی ضائع ہوتے ہیں اور آپ کا قیمتی وقت بھی۔ اس شوق پر نظرثانی کر لیجیے۔‘‘ جنرل کاکڑ نے بعد میں بتایا: ’’آپ میری حالت کا اندازہ لگا سکتے ہیں۔ زندگی میں میرا ایک ہی شوق تھا شکار، اور یہ مولوی صاحب مجھے اس سے بھی باز رہنے کا کہہ رہے تھے۔ میں نے اس لمحے خود کو قابو میں رکھا، مگر راولپنڈی واپسی تک میرے دماغ میں صرف ایک ہی بات گھوم رہی تھی — پہنچتے ہی اس کو فارغ کر دوں گا اور اس کی جگہ کوئی کام کا کور کمانڈر بھیجوں گا۔‘‘ اگلی صبح آرمی ہاؤس کے لان میں بیٹھے ہوئے وہ اب بھی اسی سوچ میں تھے کہ کون بھیجا جائے، معاملہ کیسے نمٹایا جائے۔ اچانک ان کے دماغ میں ایک فقرہ گونجا: ’’کم از کم ایک باسٹرڈ کے پاس تو بالز ہیں، باقیوں کے برعکس۔‘‘ اس کے بعد انہوں نے اس کور کمانڈر کو تبدیل کرنے کا خیال چھوڑ دیا جس نے ان کے سامنے کھل کر بات کرنے کی ہمت کی تھی۔ یہ واقعہ جنرل کاکڑ نے خود سنایا تھا۔ جب کسی نے فوراً پوچھا: ’’سر، آپ نے اس کے بعد شکار چھوڑ دیا تھا؟‘‘ تو وہ مسکراتے ہوئے بولے: ’’میں اتنا ولی اللہ تو نہیں بن گیا تھا۔‘‘ (’’باسٹرڈ‘‘ ان کا پسندیدہ slang لفظ تھا۔ خیال ہے کہ وہ کور کمانڈر لیفٹیننٹ جنرل مشتاق تھے۔) تو آج کیا ہمارے پاس ایک "باسٹرذ ود بالز" بھی نہیں بچا؟

Do we have any 'bastatd with balls' left in the Pakistan Army? General Waheed Kakar and the Corps Commander Who Spoke Up General Waheed Kakar was fond of hunting. As Army Chief he once visited Balochistan. The Corps Commander there was a deeply religious officer (often referred to as “Moulvi sahib”). Hunting equipment and feed had been loaded into the vehicles, and the Corps Commander was travelling with the Chief. Sensing an opportunity, the Corps Commander told him: “Sir, please don’t mind, but every time you visit, we have to arrange a hunt. It wastes resources and your time. You should reconsider this hobby.” General Kakar later recounted: “You can imagine my state of mind. Hunting was the only hobby I had in life, and here was this Moulvi telling me to give that up as well. I controlled myself in the moment, but all the way back to Rawalpindi, only one thought kept repeating in my head — the moment I reach, I will have him relieved and send a more useful Corps Commander in his place.” The next morning, while sitting in the lawn of Army House, he was still turning it over in his mind: whom to send as replacement, how to handle the matter. Then a phrase echoed in his head: “At least one bastard has balls, unlike the others.” After that, he dropped the idea of changing the Corps Commander who had the courage to speak frankly to him. General Kakar himself narrated this incident. When someone immediately asked, “Sir, did you quit hunting after that?” he replied with a smile: “I hadn’t become that much of a saint(Wali).” (“Bastard” was reportedly one of his favourite slang words. The Corps Commander in question is believed to have been Lt Gen Mushtaq.) So, today, don't we even have one bastard with balls?
