This morning, a Palestinian terrorist shot and killed an Israeli man, a settler living in the illegal Israeli settlement of Alei Zahav. A settler does not lose civilian protection simply by living in an illegal settlement. I mention this because we all know the justifications that will be offered in response to this attack. But the response from Israeli officials and the government is equally disgusting: calls to wipe out an entire Palestinian village, followed by the Israeli army closing entire areas of the West Bank as collective punishment. This is the Israeli government’s usual response: punish thousands of Palestinians for one person’s crime—while settlers who murder Palestinians face no comparable closures, raids, or collective punishment. This is not security. It is state violence and collective punishment.
