“Back to Black” is the title track of Amy Winehouse’s second album, released in 2006 and the first song she made with Mark Ronson. They met in March 2006 at his New York studio, where she played him 1960s girl-group records, especially the Shangri-Las. He had nothing ready so that night he wrote the piano riff that became the verse. She came back the next morning and finished the lyrics in about an hour.
Released in April 2007 as the album’s third single, the song reached No. 25 on the UK Singles Chart, then returned after her death in 2011 and peaked at No. 8. Ronson later said the sessions were so fast that he wished they had taken longer, just so he would remember more of them.
