With @HenleyRegatta in full flow, on this the 110th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme, it's an appropriate time to re-post this:

Have you seen tonight's Repair Shop? They restored an old presentation oar from OUBC 4-.

The Magdalen crew that is commemorated by the oar gets a mention in a post I wrote about oarsmen who died in WW1

Here's my small contribution to highlighting the sporting significance of Ebenezer Cobb Morley.

Have you seen that Ebenezer Cobb Morley, a founding father of the FA, #Hull-born (possibly in our car park), had a seaside gaff at Hornsea? @Hull_Museums @hull_libraries
There was a figure skating competition at the first London Games in 1908.

106 years of Olympic ice hockey! 🏒🤩
Did you know that before the first Winter Olympics at Chamonix 1924, both ice hockey and figure skating made their Olympic debuts at the Summer Olympic Games at Antwerp 1920!
Representing Canada, the Winnipeg Falcons won gold while Team USA took silver and Czechoslovakia the bronze.

Saw that maiden flight, aged 7, from our front garden in Chepstow. Years later, on 24 Oct 2003, I was in Green Park to watch three Concordes in succession make their final approaches to London Heathrow. Beautiful aircraft, unsustainable business model. ☹️
#OnThisDay in 1969, the first British-built #Concorde 002 makes its maiden flight from Filton to RAF Fairford.✈️ Learn more about this icon here👉: buff.ly/jDhgmZX #OTD #AviationHistory
See also suit cases being wheeled around that are also clearly empty.
I get unreasonably annoyed with characters in soaps carrying and drinking from what are clearly empty paper coffee cups. #Corrie #Emmerdale
Keep up the good work, Luke. ICYMI here's a short video on Sam and the origins of the tournament

Welcome to the morning commentary team. Neil and Ian have been supporting the RAR for decades and Ian used to be Chairman of the Regatta.
Thoroughly enjoyed Jonathan @LondonOnGround walking tour of Fleet St (Printers, Papers, Pubs & Prisons) this morning. Learned lots to complement my own research into Fleet Street's sporting connections sportinglandmarks.co.uk/flee…
Sorry to hear of the passing of author & athletics historian Peter Lovesey. He was so willing to help when I contacted him after reading his Official Centenary History of the AAA while researching the life of Victorian sports administrator JG Chambers. RIP

So fitting that @EvertonWomen are going to take over Goodison. Until London 2012, the record attendance for a women's football match in the UK was 53,000 for Dick Kerr's Ladies v St Helens Ladies at Goodison on Boxing Day 1920. sportinglandmarks.co.uk/wemb…

The RNLI is the official charity partner for the Boat Race 2019. Chiswick lifeboat has provided safety cover for the last 17 years. All funds go towards providing the lifesavers at Chiswick with the training and kit they need. To donate follow the link tinyurl.com/y4skrvcn
Kazakhstan is 131 x one Wales - that universal measure of large areas!
If you think Wales is playing one of those little countries, check out Kazakhstan, it's fucking massive!

Been at a sports broadcasting event at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester today. It was originally the athletics venue for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. As a swimmer, Kirsty win the 200m IM at the same Games - her first global multi-sport championships.
The elections results are in!
Kirsty Coventry (@KirstyCoventry) elected IOC President, the first female President in IOC history.
