Stay Tuned

During its formative years, Hip-Hop revered its DJs. Not only were we the event planners, but we were also the bridge between the rappers and the party people. However, once the music industry began to monetize Hip-Hop culture, the rap industry stopped taking the creativity that DJs had historically contributed seriously. Despite DJ careers being in more demand today than ever, many of us have faced questions and skepticism from those around us regarding our choice to become DJs. I've been DJing since 1983, and it's been an interesting journey, to say the least, especially in terms of collaborating with others within the music industry. Whether it's with promoters, club managers, or even some rappers, in most cases, the people I've worked with really don't know or understand the sacrifices we make to work in this industry. The countless hours of training and adaptability we must cultivate and the feedback we receive to change and alter how we present our creativity and love for music in the spaces in which we collaborate with others. It's not always the case that there's a lack of respect and genuine appreciation for our art form, but when I see and feel it, I am still truly happy and grateful for what I do as a DJ. I honestly can't see myself doing anything else. #brolicarmydjschool #ontherecord
