This week, Stanford's renown neurosurgeon Dr. Steven Chang told me my brain was cancer free. Dr. Sunil Reddy, a medical oncologist, said "you are in remission" throughout the rest of my body. I feel like I am getting a new life. Part of the reward: two new books out at Amazon.

The scent of pine duff in the air always calls me back. One of my favorite spots for this phenomenon is on the PCT on the back side of Mount Eddy, on the route from the Parks Creek Trailhead to Middle Deadfall Lake. It's featured in my new upcoming book, 52 Weekend Adventures.

Two years ago, I filed a complaint with FERC against PG&E's dam operation at Lake McCloud. Don Francisco of FERC responded by contacting both PG&E and the Forest Service. PG&E allowed the water level to rise. The Forest Service installed the dock at the boat ramp. Great work.

The best free youth fishing event in America will take place on July 25 (a Saturday) at the three ponds at the Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery Registration starts at 7:30 am. The limit is three. Parents, grandparents and friends are welcome to provide help, but are not allowed to fish.

Live longer, feel great: Just got in from a 4-mile hike in the woods, up one ridge and down, and back. After once being unable to walk a few years ago, I just about have my old pacing back. My Fitbit logged 8,000 steps. I feel as refreshed as if I’d jumped into a mountain lake.

Commonwealth Club Tom will present “Heaven Delayed, One Man’s Survival of Sixteen Near-Death Encounters" at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco. This will take place on Tuesday, May 26, with a 6 pm start. It will be a 45-minute show, with 15 min of Q&A. commonwealthclub.org
