The Bureau of Land Management approved blasting through 100-foot canyon walls at the entrance to the world's longest art gallery. So oil tankers can drive through it. Nine Mile Canyon, Utah holds more than 10,000 cultural, historical and archaeological resources, including over 1,000 known rock art sites containing more than 10,000 individual images. People have used this canyon for at least 8,000 years. The blasting happens in Gate Canyon, the entrance corridor into that gallery. Federal surveys have already found 47 historic sites along this one stretch of road alone. And it's not only the rock art. Threatened Mexican spotted owls use cliff habitat in the canyon, including areas near the proposed blasting. BLM did the minimum environmental review required and barreled ahead anyway, to move oil out of the Uinta Basin faster. Up to 1,000 vehicles a day, roughly half of them heavy tankers. This isn't BLM's first swing at this road. Duchesne County tried the same realignment in 2015 and again in 2022. Both times, public opposition killed it. This time, BLM posted it quietly in March with no public notice, denied conservation groups' request to even weigh in, and approved it in April anyway. It's the same playbook that just got this administration stopped at Big Bend National Park, except "stopped" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. There, a judge halted construction October 2nd, but only after bulldozers had already torn through the park’s grounds. A win in court doesn't un-crush what's already crushed. Three groups sued over Gate Canyon this week. But a lawsuit takes months. A blasting crew takes days. #DemsUnited 🧵

Václav Havel believed that truth was better than fear, freedom was worth fighting for, and Europe’s future belonged to everyone. He devoted his life to those convictions and helped change the course of history. On what would have been his 90th birthday, I’m remembering my friend with gratitude for his courage, his love of our common humanity, and the work we did together to bring the Czech Republic into NATO and build a Europe no longer divided. We also shared a love of music. So today, I’m playing a few notes in his honor. Happy birthday, my friend. The world could use more of your spirit.

It would be hard to overstate how ignorant the Founders of the United States were about their own country. America’s land quickly became something to be divided and parcelled out—across lines that ignored topography and dispossessed Native populations. A new book considers land ownership from the country’s founding to now. “It’s been 250 years of tumult,” Daniel Immerwahr writes. The book describes campaign after campaign to remake the land—first into flat, squared, enumerated grids, that ignored the natural features of the land, and the livelihoods of the indigenous people who had inhabited it. But beginning in the 1930s, the grid approach was supplanted by the creation of the suburbs: full of winding curves and artificial homes. “The problem with the grid was its empty abstraction,” Daniel Immerwahr writes. “The suburbs promise space yet deliver emptiness,” he continues, “This is the nineteenth-century complaint about the grid—that it was soulless—applied to its opposite.” Read more: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

Hundreds of thousands of worshippers flood the heart of Paris as Pope Leo XIV celebrates a massive open-air Mass and calls on Catholics to openly share their faith in an "increasingly secularized society." The Vatican estimates 800,000 people packed the Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde, with families lifting children toward the popemobile as the American pope traveled through the French capital. The setting carries deep history: Place de la Concorde was an execution ground during the French Revolution, where King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were guillotined. The enormous gathering comes as France sees a surge in adult conversions, with annual adult baptisms reportedly tripling since 2016 to 13,000 this year. See the remarkable scenes from Paris and what Pope Leo told the massive crowd: foxnews.com/world/pope-leo-d…

Luis Ochoa is 17. He is a U.S. citizen. He was driving with another U.S. citizen to enlist in the Marines when he was pulled over and ripped from his car by ICE. Someone started recording. This is the horrific video. While the boys were being beaten, they repeatedly tell the agents they are CITIZENS — and are ignored. One agent told said, "I don't give a damn. Your parents can't help you now." Both teenagers were detained for hours before being released. They were preparing to serve this country - yet their citizenship did not protect them from being beaten, pepper-sprayed, and detained by their own government. This is what the Nazis did then, and ICE does now.
