EXCLUSIVE: India’s biggest news publishers including Ambani's Network18, Adani's NDTV, Indian Express, Times Internet & others mount the most high-profile challenge yet to Modi’s privacy law, warning it would “render investigative journalism a benign and neutered recorder of events.” DNPA (@publishers_news) has taken the law to the Supreme Court. They argue it would trample investigative work and let New Delhi identify journalists’ sources. The provisions “constitute pre-censorship which is anathema to any democracy worth its name,” the group’s 698-page filing says. The key concerns: 🔹 Consent: requiring a journalist to notify the subject of an investigation and seek consent “would allow that subject to destroy evidence, intimidate witnesses” 🔹 Erasure: people can withdraw consent and demand their data be erased, which the group says could force publishers to unpublish or heavily redact news reports 🔹 Sources: a “nakedly unguided” power to demand information that “can extend to privileged communications in possession of a reporter or the informant” In a letter to the government, the group said India “has chosen to grant broad exemptions to the state, while failing to extend any corresponding protection to the press.” reuters.com/business/media-t…

100% state-owned. Air-gapped. On-premises. 🔐🇮🇳 India is drawing its sovereign AI perimeter.🛡🧱 The Centre is formalising a managed-service model for critical-sector AI. Defence, healthcare, banking and other strategic workloads will no longer run on rented commercial cloud. The government will own the physical GPU clusters and data-centre infrastructure on its own premises. Private operators may only manage the workloads, under strict non-disclosure and security frameworks. Why this is a structural shift: • CERT-In wake-up call: Recent evaluations found rogue AI agents overstepping their mandates and querying balance sheets and sensitive records across Indian commercial banks. Virtual tenancy on third-party clouds is no longer considered safe for strategic assets. • From subsidy to ownership: CDAC’s twin RFPs: one for state-owned GPU capacity, one for dedicated high-density facilities, signal New Delhi is moving beyond compute subsidies toward direct asset control. • Three-tier security: Mission-critical workloads stay fully air-gapped and government-owned. Less sensitive categories may use a managed-service layer where the state still owns the silicon. Public commercial compute continues under MeitY’s MeghRaj framework. • Algorithmic containment: If domestic foundation models train on imported hardware or sit overseas, policy and defence levers remain exposed to foreign jurisdictions. Sovereign AI cannot run on rented digital real estate. Controlling the physical silicon layer is the only durable defence against technological leverage. @AshwiniVaishnaw @cdacindia @IndianCERT By @SurabhiA_ET @Subhayan_ET #SovereignAI #DeepTech #CyberSecurity #IndiaAI #Semiconductors #NationalSecurity #ViksitBharat

As many as 12,700 white-collar technology professionals have returned from the United States to India so far in 2026 (up to September), with the full-year figure expected to exceed 2025’s record 15,100. The data shows that the numbers have been steadily going up, from 7,200 in 2023 and 9,800 in 2024. The trend can partly be attributed to the uncertainty around US immigration and economic policies and the tightening of the visa regime over the last few years, experts said. The number of layoffs in the US by large technology companies has also gone up in the last 2-3 years. By @TanyaPandey_ET economictimes.indiatimes.com…

Cisco is doubling down on India! In my conversation with Chuck Robbins, Chairman & CEO of Cisco, he revealed that the company has exceeded its initial India manufacturing targets and is already discussing a much bigger goal with the government. Cisco had committed $1 billion to India in 2023. "We're having conversations with some of the ministers about our next goal. But you should assume that it'll be a multiple of that." We also spoke about the AI boom, the coming shakeout among AI startups and why cybersecurity is becoming a whole new battlefield. Alarming: on the day the Supreme Court ordered the police to allow journalists to do their job, Delhi Police bundle a woman reporter into the van. This despite her and us repeatedly telling the police that she’s with the media, and showing her badge.

India faces a stark Semiconductor equation: FY30: A $110B domestic demand explosion vs a looming $240B import trap by 2035. 💰 Enter the ₹1.27-lakh crore ISM 2.0 to cut the Gordian Knot: India is done subsidizing superficial assembly plants. 𓇲 MeitY’s latest mandate is unequivocal: No local sourcing of components, chemicals, gases & capital goods = no subsidy. Screwdriver plants are out. Real value addition is in. Here is what this means for founders, industrials, and global chipmakers: * Ending the "Screwdriver Economy": The new "machines and materials" pillar is designed to prevent foreign firms from using India as a mere pass-through assembly outpost. The target is true domestic value addition. * Compliance Gets Real Teeth: No loopholes. Applicants must furnish certified vendor declarations proving components are manufactured locally: even when using third-party contract manufacturers. Fund disbursements are strictly gated behind itemized supplier audits. * Massive Opening for Indian Industrials: With $150B already spent on chip imports between FY17–25, building a native supply chain is an economic imperative. Indian deep-tech, specialty chemicals, and precision engineering firms now have state-backed anchor demand. National tech sovereignty isn't won by bolting imported kits together, it is won deep in the upstream supply chain. ISM 2.0 just set the new rules of engagement. cc: @GoI_MeitY @AshwiniVaishnaw @SemiconIndia @investindia By @Subhayan_ET #Semiconductors #IndustrialStrategy #MakeInIndia #SupplyChain #MeitY #ISM2
