ALT Banned Books Week (October 5-11) graphic titled 'From BANNED to Beloved' created by Surrey Libraries. The image shows three classic children's book covers: Alice in Wonderland, The Lorax' by Dr. Seuss, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' by L. Frank Baum with illustrations by W.W. Denslow. The text asks 'Did you know that some of the stories we grew up with were once Banned Books?'
ALT A graphic with the cover of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, showing the iconic orange-moustached character standing among colourful trees with yellow and orange tufts against a blue sky and green grass. A red 'BANNED' stamp is overlaid across the cover. The text explains that the book was banned in parts of the US in the 1980s for being 'anti-logging' and accused of unfairly portraying the forest industry. It notes the irony that it's now celebrated as a classic eco-story about caring for the planet.
ALT Graphic with the vintage cover of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, illustrated by W.W. Denslow, showing the Tin Man and Cowardly Lion. A red BANNED stamp is overlaid across the cover. The text explains the book was banned in some US schools from the 1920s-1950s for depicting 'strong, independent women' and 'glorifying witches,' with some religious groups claiming it promoted 'unwholesome values.' It is now considered an enduring tale of courage and friendship.
ALT A graphic about Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll featuring the book cover with a large red 'BANNED' stamp across it. The cover shows the classic illustration of Alice in her blue dress with playing cards scattered around her. The text explains that the book was banned in China in 1931 because animals talking was considered to 'put humans and beasts on the same level,' which was deemed insulting and dangerous at the time. Today, the book is cherished for its whimsy and imagination.
