It was my pleasure yesterday to attend the luncheon hosted by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in New Alamein City, Egypt, alongside General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, on the sidelines of the African Union Coordination Meeting.
In this context, we reaffirm the steadfast position of the United States in support of the Sudanese people and its support for preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
We also reaffirm the United States’ continued efforts, alongside our Egyptian partners and our other regional and international partners and allies, to advance a political solution to the crisis, contribute to ending the war, and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Sudanese people, as called for by President Trump.
These efforts aim to enable Sudan to restore its security and stability, embark on reconstruction and development, and, through an inclusive Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led national dialogue, transition toward a civilian-led government.
The United States stands ready to support all efforts leading to a comprehensive dialogue among the Sudanese political forces, leading to a preliminary road map of the future of the Sudan. We encourage the Sudanese to be inclusive and to engage actively with regional and international stakeholders to coordinate views, harmonizing efforts toward a conducive and peaceful path to ending the war in Sudan.

Excellent analysis of what's currently unfolding in the Horn of Africa
For months, the Sudanese military has cast a worried gaze across the border to the Benishangul-Gumuz Region. As early as January, the signs of the construction of a new military outpost could be seen. The thought, for Sudanese officials at the time, was that Ethiopia would allow this base to be a staging ground for the RSF and SPLM-N (Hilu) to launch an offensive into the Blue Nile state.
Indeed, today, the base in Assosa is now teeming with RSF soldiers. The Emirati playbook of plane after plane of weapons shipments has militarized the area.
But with the outbreak of fighting in northern Ethiopia last week, Sudan’s concerns are no longer only about the paramilitary force challenging Khartoum for control of the state. Read how a Sudan without a stable center now finds itself pulled into a challenge for wider regional power, with its hinterlands serving as “strategic depth” for each side to gain new footholds.

In Ethiopia, the process that began when seven armed groups declared an alliance on 20 September has now carried the fighting all the way to Addis Ababa. Almost every analyst is asking the same thing: who will win? But that is not the question that matters.
Look at the years since Abiy Ahmed took power in 2018 and one thing stands out: the core of Ethiopia's internal and external security equation has not changed. An era that opened with promises of reform and was crowned with a Nobel Peace Prize failed to prevent the Tigray war, the Fano insurgency in Amhara, the armed conflict in Oromia, or the persistent tensions with neighbours, Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia chief among them. Even ceasefires like the Pretoria Agreement never hardened into lasting stability. As the guns fell silent on one front, another opened.
The skyscrapers, wide boulevards and showpiece projects rising in Addis Ababa tell Ethiopia's growth story. Step outside the capital, though, and the picture changes entirely: regions where state authority has frayed, armed groups, millions of displaced people, and daily life shaped by insecurity. The gulf between these two Ethiopias is the country's greatest vulnerability.
That is why predicting a winner only scratches the surface. If Ethiopia wants to endure, with Abiy or without him, it has to stop asking whether it can win this war and start asking how it escapes the cycle of insecurity that has been reproducing itself for years. aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/2…

He was arrested again in 2017, subjected to a secret trial, and convicted of insulting the “status and prestige of the UAE and its symbols, including its leaders”. Sentenced to 10 years in jail, he has remained in solitary confinement in al-Sadr, the maximum-security jail"
