At the playground, my 8 year-old went straight for the basketball court, and I cringed when I saw him head right in with his own basketball to join a couple of cool-looking teenage boys who were already playing. In mom-like fashion, I thought, "Oh, man, they're going to be so annoyed. They're not going to be nice to him, and his feelings are going to get hurt." I kept glancing over to see how it was going and was surprised to see them tossing the ball back to my son when it got away from him and interacting with him a little bit. Then after a while, my 4 year-old decided to join, and I thought, "Now, this is too much." I called for him to come back to me, saying, "That's a big boy game." To my further surprise, the younger teen said, "No, that's ok. We're gonna play 2 on 2, and he'll be my teammate." I was somewhat stunned to watch both young men being incredibly patient, passing the ball to my sons, cheering for them, and giving advice on how to play. Later, as they left the court to join their family, I thanked them for their kindness and noticed one son was wearing a cross around his neck and another had on a Christian t-shirt. And suddenly, it all made sense. Those were young men who'd been raised to treat others the way they would want to be treated, and it was a beautiful thing to see.
