BREAKING!
Today we're launching 'Keep Sutton Moving Forward', our manifesto for the 2026 local elections.
It showcases the bold, ambitious and vibrant ideas that the Liberal Democrats stand ready to deliver to deliver the brightest possible future for our borough.

I’ve never seen a Budget with so many announcements that add up to so little.
Families and businesses needed bold action to bring down everyday costs and a clear plan to get our economy moving. This Budget fell well short on both.
I’ll be pressing the Chancellor on this when he comes before the Treasury Committee.

John Healey thought defence funding was worth resigning over when he was Defence Minister. But apparently it wasn’t worth sorting out in his first Budget as Chancellor.
Our armed forces deserve better than more promises kicked down the road.

This has been a treading water Budget. It's kicked the can down the road on so many decisions.
A long list of small measures doesn't add up to a proper plan for growth.

This country needed the Chancellor to be bold today.
Bold on Europe. Bold on growth.
Unfortunately this budget does not cut it.

The Chancellor's budget was far too timid.
Our economy is rigged in favour of big banks, energy giants and tech companies.
The Liberal Democrats want to make them pay their fair share, tackle injustice and deliver lasting relief from the cost of living crisis.

An update on maternity services at St Helier Hospital 👇
After speaking to staff and residents and reading the independent reports, I’m clear that we need to find a way to keep these vital services on site while repairs to the pipework take place.
One particularly concerning thing I’ve heard is that, if neonatal services were moved from St Helier to other hospitals, those hospitals simply would not be able to cope.
I’ll be making the case to the NHS Trust and the Health Minister to keep services at St Helier.

Lib Dem plan for the budget: cut your energy bills by taxing banks on unearned profits

Fascinating to hear Liz Truss make the argument this morning that, actually, it was the Bank of England and Treasury officials fault that the gilt markets got upset.
It had nothing to do with the £150 billion plus unfunded, unverified tax cuts she proposed.

It was great to be joined by 40 local businesses and CEO of @londonchamber Karim Fatehi at my pre-Budget breakfast.
They're a vital part of our community as well as our economy, and I'll be putting their concerns directly to the Chancellor when I grill him next month.

I've been pushing for urgent action to protect maternity services at St Helier.
We have known about these issues for years. The government must bring forward plans for our new hospital building.

Rejoining the EU single market and customs union would boost growth, raise revenues and allow tax cuts for everyone.

1/9 🔶 As we mark the end of National Hate Crime Awareness Week, last night at Full Council, our Lib Dem councillors supported “Celebrating Diversity and Standing Against Hate in Sutton”.
Here’s why it matters. 🧵
8/9 Cllr Jo Elgarf pays tribute to women who inspired her: Ruth Dombey, Helen Bailey, Pam Fry MBE and the late Marian James.
A reminder of the difference local leadership and service can make, and how that example inspires others to step forward.
