In the long run, that would’ve been better. It would’ve at least made far more of the audience accept her as the next natural protagonist of the Skywalker saga, regardless of any other issues with the character, real or perceived.

I can genuinely answer that because I know the reason:
He’s not a douche (rare in Hollywood). He’s likable, people enjoy being around him, and they feel safe with him. He’s also a strong producer and a good ideas guy. Yes, his talent as a writer/director is… questionable, but you have to consider his other merits as well.
