I mean, it's all doable. We just have to build lots of solar, wind, and nuclear capacity; and stop using fossil fuels.

WWI is so visually fascinating. From red trousers and bugle charges to aerial bombers, tanks, and poison gas in four years. Modernity born screaming.

If you want to experience what lack of structured education and mentorship creates, consider the tech industry constantly rediscovering things that were thoroughly researched in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. We are wasting so much time.

🇯🇵 Wim Wenders' did an amazing job of showing what Tokyo looked like in the middle of the 1980s. Sometimes, it almost looks like a dream or like AI but it's actually completely real.

Fantastic to see plans by @MichaelDnes1 et al. at Future Works for a new motorway and fast railway between Manchester and Sheffield progress. Especially great to have such big local political backing for it. Would be such a boost to the Northern economy. transpennineconnect.com/

Many people think that the words “Artificial Intelligence” are inaccurate, and very ineloquent, relative to AI, or Artificial Intelligence. A far more elegant and accurate description of this new phenomena would be Superior Intelligence (SI) or, Extreme Intelligence (EI) or, Supreme Intelligence (SI). This is a Poll, and I would appreciate everybody voting! Which is the best name for this ever growing “Revolution?” President DONALD J. TRUMP

Crazy, unexpected science news today: the brain is actually 2 colocated but independent organs that develop from 2 totally separate progenitor cells in early development. Big implications for some research areas (eg ALS) & for creating ethical brainless clones for transplant.

this is the kind of terminal merchant brain thinking about economic development that results in the ~1% annual gdp growth that characterised much of the victorian era, and not the ~5% gdp growth that characterised the postwar era (and that china enjoys today), when we banished it
Sadly, if you pretend that teachers and nurses 'create wealth' then you end up with little wealth and fewer of either.

Retrieval practice is always vastly more effective than re-consuming information (re-reading, re-watching, transcribing, etc.). The way you make it easier to pull information out of your head is, well, by practicing pulling it out of your head.

This might be the general “British policy disease” aka Thatcherite socialism.

You see this all the time in debate over English Higher Education: people talk about it as a market, but they in fact want it to be centrally planned. This is the major tension in university policy.

A simple tool to make this easier (which my founder clients find shockingly effective): train your brain to “worry on schedule” If you can intentionally dedicate ~30 min/day to processing all your open loops, it’s easier to “shut off” at other times builders.genagorlin.com/p/wo…
Your daily goal should be “how relaxed can I be while doing everything that needs to be done?” Quality of life will improve 10x

I don’t really have a take on what mathematicians are and what mathematicians do, artists or scientists, problem solvers or theory builders, because whenever I did maths I only did it out of curiosity and compulsion. I just like messing around with things that interest me.

funniest outcome would be AI plateauing at a level of intelligence just smart enough to completely destabilize human society and make us all useless idiots, but not smart enough to really bring about anything resembling post scarcity
