What if the sun was more than a source of light? What if it represented wisdom, knowledge, and good fortune? ☀️
In Igbo traditional religion, known as Odinala, Anyanwu, meaning “Eye of the Sun,” is the alusi associated with good fortune, knowledge, and wisdom. An alusi is a spirit created by Chukwu, the Supreme God, to fulfil a particular responsibility connected to nature or a principle.
But Anyanwu’s story doesn’t end in mythology.
In 1956, Nigerian artist Ben Enwonwu created Anyanwu, a sculpture inspired by the sun and Igbo spirituality. The artwork became one of his most recognised works, celebrating African identity through modern sculpture.
A decade later, in 1966, Nigeria presented a copy of the sculpture to the United Nations in New York, taking a piece of Nigerian artistic heritage to the world.
From traditional belief to a globally recognised work of art, Anyanwu reminds us that African creativity has always carried stories worth telling.
If you could own one artwork in the world, regardless of its price, which one would you choose and why?
