I recently hit my 44th b-day and the 44th year since I had open heart surgery. 💙 I’ve never liked to talk about either (my age OR my heart surgery), but the older I get, I’m so incredibly grateful and proud to still be here without any restrictions, medications or much visible evidence that it even happened. However, even though I obviously don’t remember the surgery, a few mental and emotional scars remain. My pediatrician, Dr. Flores, discovered something was wrong during, what my parents thought, was a typical check-up, but the pressure in my arms and legs was extremely low. It was determined I needed Coarctation of the Aorta surgery at the incredible @ChildrensPgh, to repair and reconstruct my aorta because it was so incredibly narrow and blood wasn’t pumping to my body. 🫀 My parents took turns staying with me at the hospital, never leaving my side, while working full time. My Dad would stay all day and my Mom would stay all night. When my Mom saw me hooked up to all the machines looking blue (at 3 months old!), she passed out. My Dad said one of the few times he cried was driving home from the hospital and hearing the @NeilDiamond song “Heartlight,” which was a hit at the time. He had to pull over to the side of the road. The surgery was a huge success, even though it was risky since I was so little. Then the check-ups started. Every month, then every couple months, every 6 months and then ultimately every 1 - 2 years. Growing up, those check-ups were emotionally and mentally exhausting and terrifying. Will this be the one during which they’ll find an issue? Also, as a people pleaser who has always loved and been EXTREMELY close to both of my parents, I would feel the need to put on a Shirley Temple-esque, rousing performance to show how not scared and healthy I was. I also only ever told a handful of people about it because I didn’t want to take on the baggage or persona of someone who had heart surgery. I just had my 2 year check up this week and I’m in perfect health, feeling and looking (excuse me 💅🏻) better than I ever have. I felt the urge to write all of this because I’m just really grateful to be happy, healthy and another year older. ✨ – at Manhattan, NY

“Sometimes people leave you halfway through the woods.” 💙 Seth Marquette was smart, kind, funny, generous, larger than life and a HUGE @Madonna fan, which is one of the MANY things that connected us. ✨ He also introduced us to some of the incredible people in his life, including his decades-long friend @amilouiseallen who we shared a particularly memorable weekend in Atlantic City for @Madonna’s Rebel Heart tour (he even caught the bouquet during “Material Girl”). The older you get, the harder it becomes to make new, deep friendships and at the time, Seth felt like the brother I never had. You wanted to protect him and follow along with him on an adventure in equal parts.
