This budget does very little to the overall level of tax, and the overall level of tax is going up significantly.
Here's the tax increases over the next few years, in 2026 £. You can just about see today's changes in green.
#Beavers v #Trees : I’m struggling. This is just 100m of bank after the high water here (6m height variation of the #RiverForth here).
There must be a way of trying to get some balance because we have lost and are losing so many trees (let alone banks damaged from burrowing)
I confess I’m struggling with seeing the pointless damage to our trees (100s of which we planted, “no good deed goes unpunished”).
What to do?
Seems mad to have so many 🦫s here with this river height range, but I know they might be useful much further upstream.

An increase to £13.20p/h equates to a minimum wage of £27,456, based on a 40 hour week.
Once you factor in employers NI and basic pension contributions, the MINIMUM cost to hire a 21 year old for a company would be £31,461.
This is before you factor in any overarching business costs like office space, laptops, phone, software, training, support staff, vehicles etc.
This is going to be devastating to SME's who cant put together a simple 12 month budget without the goalposts being moved & their margins squeezed.
It'll also be catastrophic to youngsters opportunities because businesses will simply not be able to afford to hire them.
What's also incredible is that anything above £50,270 is seen as 'high earnings' in the UK and is taxed at 40%!
We are governed by financially and economically illiterate morons.
This will not end well.
Seeing more #Woodcock arriving here with these storms after their #migration , joining the residents that are here all year (that appear larger to my eyes).
Some journey… this one was feeding away in the soft verges as I came back from clearing branches.

Good grief - what on earth has happened to leadership & government of 🇺🇸?
You must speak up when you see or hear such truly appalling views, comments and behaviour of your Leaders.
Calling Putin a “humanitarian”? How can an US official say, “I commend you”? 🤷♂️
A new low.
William Hague declares Trump the worst president of his lifetime, and struggles to see how anyone could have a different opinion.
“This mishandling of world affairs … is the most serious development and negative development in the world since the Second World War.“
@StigAbell | @WilliamJHague
Is this a parody account? He has “Duke MBA” on his Bio … surely standards of education or quality of students at Duke could not have fallen to these new lows?
“Massive allies with Russia for most of our (🇺🇸) history”… what an utter buffoon. How warped these idiots are. Sad.
You are a fucking retard. We were massive allies with Russia for most of our history. It is the Uk who we have had to fight multiple wars against. Go to Kiev and help them fight if you think it’s worthwhile.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
US-Russia were formal allies only in WWII (1941-45). Earlier ties were often friendly (Civil War support, Alaska sale) but not massive allies most of history. US fought UK in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812; close allies since.

Replying to @ChrisGPackham
So basically take from people who do the right thing and bribe people don’t not to riot?
You do realise France is the highest taxed country in Europe. Switzerland is one of the lowest taxed and doesn’t have riots.

Vegans: "Oat milk is better for you and better for the planet."
Great point.
So instead of a cow turning grass into milk in a field down the road, we've developed a twelve-step industrial alternative.
Step one: plough a field. Pasture is never ploughed; an oat field is turned over, sprayed and emptied of everything living in it every single year.
Step two: spray the standing crop with glyphosate a fortnight before harvest so it dries on schedule.
Step three: ship the oats from wherever the contract was cheapest this year, Scandinavia, Canada, the Baltic, to a factory that is almost never in the country drinking the result.
Step four: mill the oats, stir them into water, and add enzymes to pre-digest the starch into sugar, which is why it tastes sweet and why a glass carries about 7g of carbohydrate and 1g of protein. Milk is the other way round.
Step five: spin out the bran and fibre, which is most of the oat, and sell it as pig feed.
Step six: look at what's left. 10% oat, 90% water, tastes of nothing.
Step seven: pour in rapeseed oil, from a crushing plant, because the oat has no fat and the coffee needs something to foam.
Step eight: add dipotassium phosphate so it doesn't curdle the moment it meets a hot drink.
Step nine: add calcium carbonate from a quarry, potassium iodide from a mine, vitamin D2 grown on irradiated fungus, and B12 brewed in a bacterial vat, most likely in China. Four continents, to put back what the cow put in for free.
Step ten: heat it to 140 degrees, homogenise it, and seal it in a six-layer carton of card, plastic and aluminium.
Step eleven: load the cartons onto lorries and drive 90% water up and down the motorway network.
Step twelve: print a picture of a field on the carton. Not the ploughed one.
The cow: stands in a field that has never seen a plough, eats grass no human can digest, and makes milk that already contains the fat, the protein, the calcium, the iodine and the B12 in the proportions a mammal is built for. The herd is inside 30 miles of your fridge. The bottle came in a van.
Better for the planet, though. Says so on the carton. Next to the field.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis SLAMS Trump for suspending Russia sanctions:
“Beyond irresponsible. What part of enforcing a law passed 86-11 by the Senate does the President and his advisors not understand? It’s unconscionable that this administration is capitulating to a Russian dictator who illegally invaded Ukraine and butchers innocent civilians every single day.
If the President wants to actually bring down energy prices, he can do it by solving the Iran problem, not by doing a solid for Vladimir Putin.”
Thoughts on #PoweredParagliders? I am in awe of #Paragliders as I think so skilful to “read” air and catch thermals to soar higher…
…and they are quiet.
… but these motorised things?
I’m not a fan and nor are the birds.
Proper racket.

Overnight, the Russians used 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 attack drones and loitering munitions against our energy and critical infrastructure in Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and Kharkiv. A targeted Russian ballistic missile strike specifically against energy infrastructure – the very infrastructure covered by the ceasefire announced by the American President. The strike was entirely deliberate and demonstrative in its scale – Russia has never before shown such ostentatious disrespect toward the United States. Russia does not consider the American President’s statements strong. Unfortunately, at least 600,000 people are now without power. Outages could become even more widespread. Unfortunately, there is significant damage to facilities and equipment – at 26 facilities of our power system and four facilities in the oil and gas sector. I am grateful to the repair crews, all Ukrainian energy workers, and the personnel of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine for all their efforts to address the aftermath of this Russian strike. Tragically, there have been fatalities and injuries.
We ask America and EVERYONE in the world who does not turn a blind eye to reality to respond – and to respond forcefully. Russia has squandered the opportunity for de-escalation and has clearly chosen to continue its insane war of annihilation. We ask President Trump to impose STRONG sanctions on Russia, especially since the Lindsey Graham bill, which was recently passed and signed into law, authorizes and regulates such measures. The American President has all the effective and necessary tools to bring peace closer through strength, justice, and pressure on the aggressor. We ask for additional packages of Patriot missile interceptors for Ukraine. It is entirely fair for us to tell the United States, Europe, and all our partners that no country in the world should be left alone to face such a deranged and pro-war actor as Russia. I am grateful to everyone who helps Ukraine! Peace can only come through strength, and we ask America to remember this principle of Reagan’s. Glory to Ukraine!

Four in ten of the salmon put into Scotland's sea cages in 2022 died before anyone could eat them, and the inspectors made two unannounced visits in three years.
Scottish farmed salmon is sold as the clean, cold-water, omega-3 food of the north, the fish the health pages tell you to eat twice a week. The industry's own production survey, published last autumn, put the losses on the 2022 intake at about 40%, the worst since records began in 1989. At some sites it was worse: the Bay of Holland cages lost four fish in ten in a single month at the start of 2025. In one November, string jellyfish drifted through two sites and killed 194,000 fish.
Across 2023, 2024 and 2025 the farms reported nearly 36 million dead salmon. The Fish Health Inspectorate, the body meant to police it, made two unannounced inspections in 2024 and none at all in 2023 or in the first nine months of 2025. It recorded 55 legal breaches in 2024, most of them for record-keeping, and has not issued a financial penalty since 2021. Mowi's site at Inchmore lost 3 million fish in three years and was never inspected. A hatchery that had taken up to £5 million of public money reported more than 9 million dead.
The minister responsible, Mairi Gougeon, told parliament Scotland has "a really robust regulatory regime".
A cattle farmer who lost four animals in ten before slaughter would have the ministry at the gate inside a week, and quite rightly.
The salmon dies by the million in a net off a sea loch, and the fillet goes out under a saltire.
