THE ISEKAI DOCTOR 2: THE NOVEL — Nota del autor

THE ISEKAI DOCTOR 2: THE NOVEL — Afterword
No thinker has probed modernity more deeply than the German sociologist Max Weber. Among the many concepts he left us, “the disenchantment of the world” (Entzauberung der Welt) cuts particularly sharply to the heart of the society we inhabit.
In one of its central senses, disenchantment describes the waning authority of magic in how people understand and act upon the world. Weber traced this process through transformations within religion as well as the development of modern science. With the advance of rationalization, the world comes to be regarded as something that can, in principle, be understood and mastered through knowledge and calculation. A world once alive with the whims of gods and the whispers of spirits is recast as a cold mechanism governed by chains of cause and effect.
THE ISEKAI DOCTOR can be read as a reenactment, on the stage of another world, of this grand Weberian drama of disenchantment. In this world, illness is understood as a curse inflicted by evil spirits, and healing is entrusted to the sacred rite of “purification magic.” It is an order sustained by inherited tradition and devotion to religious values. Into this world steeped in magic, our protagonist, Yuito Amami, brings medicine, the very embodiment of modern rationalism.
In one sense, what I have portrayed in this second volume is a stark confrontation between these two ways of understanding the world.
As far as his choice of means is concerned, Amami’s conduct can be described as thoroughly “instrumentally rational.” To save lives, he uses triage and surgery, selecting the means he judges most effective in the circumstances. He allows neither social rank nor personal feeling to take precedence over clinical judgment.
Yet we must not lose sight of what sustains that seemingly cold rationality. At its heart is devotion to a value he believes he must uphold for its own sake: “I do not want to abandon anyone I could save.” His commitment reaches beyond calculations of personal gain or loss. In Weber’s terms, his rigorously instrumental choice of means serves a value-rational commitment.
When Saia confronts the illness afflicting Hugh in the magical language of “evil spirits,” Amami identifies it as appendicitis and surgically removes the inflamed appendix. As a literary analogy, this scene evokes the “paradigm shift” associated with the historian and philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn: a revolutionary moment in which an established worldview begins to give way to a new framework, opening a path to treatment where the old account offered none.
Nor does Amami dismiss Saia’s purification magic out of hand. Instead, he suggests that it may have effects comparable to those of antibiotics in his own world. This, too, is disenchantment at work within the story: the intellectual effort to reinterpret a magical phenomenon in terms of causes that can be investigated.
Aither undergoes a similar transformation. Once called the “breath of God” and used to ease the suffering of those nearing death, it becomes, in Amami’s hands, a means of inducing general anesthesia. A mysterious substance finds a new role in medical practice directed toward a clearly defined end.
Yet Weber also saw the shadow cast by rationalization: the “iron cage” of an economic order that continues to bind people even after the convictions that gave it meaning have withered. His warning about “specialists without spirit” conjures a world ruled by efficiency and calculation, emptied of the values and passions that once made it rich.
In our own world, supposedly so thoroughly rationalized, we can see signs of a renewed attraction to magical narratives, as though people were seeking escape from the suffocating confines of that cage. Claims contradicted by scientific evidence, and conspiracy theories that reduce complex events to simple antagonisms, seem to be spreading across the world, little by little, like a new language of curses.
This paradoxical turn can be read as a form of what later thinkers have called “reenchantment.” Weber himself evoked a related but distinct image: the old gods rising from their graves as disenchanted, impersonal powers. He was speaking of the conflict among ultimate values in modern life. Yet his image reminds us how clearly he saw, more than a century ago, that rationalization would not end the struggle among rival “gods” for command over human lives.
Amami’s ambition to establish a hospital springs from a humanitarian ideal: to save everyone. At the same time, it marks the birth of this world’s first medical system, as the work of healing begins to assume a rational, bureaucratic form.
In this, we may recognize the very path our own world has taken toward modernity.
I hope you will continue to follow his journey with affection, watching what changes his good intentions bring to this world, and how the world responds in turn.
Finally, let me once again offer my heartfelt thanks to all of you who have picked up this book and read this far, following a story that at times explores complex and challenging themes.

P.S.
Volume 2 of THE ISEKAI DOCTOR novel series is out now!
I’m sorry that it’s only available in Japanese for now, but I hope its success will allow us to bring it to readers around the world someday.
As the original creator, I wrote a little in this volume’s afterword about the ideas and intentions behind the story. For now, I’d like to share this afterword with all of you as one small thing I can do.
English isn’t my first language, so I’m sorry if some of the wording sounds a little awkward.
I hope to share everything we create with all of you someday, and I’ll keep putting my heart into our stories.
