Beyond Scientific Names: Yorùbá Plant Naming, Àṣẹ and the Forgotten System of Classifying Nature By Olori Asabi Ifaniwura What if plants were never simply leaves, roots, stems and flowers? What if the names our ancestors gave them were actually carrying an entire system of knowledge about their nature, qualities, functions and relationship with the world? One of the greatest challenges facing indigenous African knowledge today is not necessarily the absence of knowledge, but the gradual loss of the frameworks through which that knowledge was understood, organised, transmitted and preserved. For generations, Yorùbá communities developed sophisticated ways of observing, naming, identifying and classifying plants. These practices were not random acts of naming. They emerged from generations of interaction with the environment, careful observation, experimentation, oral transmission and cultural interpretation. Yet, as Western educational frameworks became dominant, many indigenous ways of understanding the natural world were pushed to the margins. What was once taught through language, observation, apprenticeship, storytelling, Ifá knowledge and traditional practice increasingly became something that was either overlooked or considered inferior to formally recognised scientific knowledge. This raises an important question: If we can learn to understand nature through Western scientific classification, why should we not also learn to understand nature through our own indigenous systems of knowledge? President Tinubu: “When I first arrived in the United States as a young man, I drove a taxi to earn money for my education. I even had to postpone starting school for several months to save enough,” the President said. Tinubu shared the experience while explaining why education remains a major priority of his administration, saying he understands the financial difficulties students face while pursuing their studies. He explained that after arriving in Chicago, he took up different jobs to support himself and pay his way through university. “I know what it means to worry about tuition, accommodation and how to make ends meet while pursuing an education. Those experiences have stayed with me,” he added. Tinubu said his personal experience had strengthened his belief that every Nigerian child should have access to education, irrespective of their background or their parents' financial situation. “I know what education made possible in my own life, and I believe every Nigerian child deserves that same opportunity, regardless of where they are born or what their parents can afford,” he said. The President highlighted some of his administration's education initiatives, including more than ₦372 billion in student loans disbursed through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to support students with institutional fees and upkeep. He also said the government's technical and vocational education programme had attracted over 2.8 million applications, while 38 technical colleges had been rehabilitated.
