I was definitely one of those fans defending the Bingo Dance and all the silly moments from Dragon Ball Super but do I think that those things are definitive of “Toriyama’s Vegeta”? No. The Controversy surrounding this episode has revealed to me just how much I look at this show entirely differently, Like Vegeta’s explosion in the ToP for Example, If you know what Ki is and the amount of Control it demands of your emotions You can understand why Vegeta’s body being able to withstand that explosion marked character development, I know that sounds weird but Ki as a concept when cultivated causes spiritual and mental growth due to not allowing your emotions to dictate your actions so Vegeta cultivating his Ki to the point he could withstand that level of Power is a signifier of his spiritual growth.
Fundamentally I think the disconnect I have with the Modern fandom is that they don’t understand what “Ki” actually is and how central it is to the plot and story. Ki is not just a means of getting stronger it is a means of spiritual growth because it causes you to take your intense emotions and selfish thoughts and control them for the sake of getting stronger taking your Ego-Centric Drive to get stronger and Transforming it into a cycle of spiritual refinement. In the latest episode of Dragon Ball Super Beerus and pretty much every episode I have seen so far this has been the Focus and fans have completely overlooked it but especially in this Episode.
Goku as a Saiyan was born very strong (Genki) and he had very strong emotions (Yuki) and His Grandpa Taught him a form of “Right Mindness” that allowed him to control his emotions which allowed him utilize his Ki but also purified his heart through his dedication to Martial Arts.
This latest Episode of Dragon Ball Super Beerus focused completely on that, The Bingo dance and all that stuff is great but this is the basis that Toriyama used as the basis for his characters development, Vegeta DID sell out his pride for the sake of protecting his family in this episode because his original pride meant that he wouldn’t even do that he wouldn’t cater to Beerus at all the original bingo dance etc. just exaggerated that. Despite that there is still a bit of old Vegeta beneath the surface and Beerus is catching on to this in this episode he may fight for his family now, But he still folds in Beerus’s presence like Vegeta’s father due to the doubt in his soul. This is Beerus further testing and spiritually cultivating Vegeta like he did with Vegeta and Goku in Battle of Gods.
I understand being worried about Toei’s handling of the characters but I think there is a disconnect between what Fans THINK Toriyama used as the Basis for his characters development and the actual reality, Toriyama was way more focused on the Spiritual Development of his characters through Ki and how that changed their behavior all of that other stuff just adds on to this idea and makes it clearer but even in this latest episode I did not see it as a disservice whatsoever because again what fans THINK the focus is for Toriyama is quite the opposite. Despite all that I definitely agree that fans generally do not understand Toriyama’s intent with the characters and how central Ki and spiritual cultivation is as the focus in comparison to everything else.

Dragon Ball fans have been screaming at each other all week over Vegeta's humiliation being cut.
Personally, I think Toei created this divide long before any of this even happened.
