This point really cannot be overstated. In 2020 there was a real divide between those pushing for abolition, defund, and minor reforms, and defund was widely understood by many on the Left to be the moderate position. To see defund now become framed as “too radical” says a LOT.
Police is a very new concept. Like it’s younger than the United States of America. So the idea that police abolition even has to become defund in the first place was already the liberals co-opting the movement and even that has become a step too far.
