Lasayen’s story begins at a watering point. In September 2014, a one-month-old elephant calf was found in a community-dug well in Samburu. A herd had been there in the night, drinking; a baby fell in and, the morning, with people around, they made a fateful decision to leave without him. The community alerted the rangers, who pulled him out. An attempt was made to reunite him with a passing herd but it didn't work. We were called the following day, flew in, and brought him back to the Nursery on a drip. Lasayen is now eleven years old and last year, he heard the call of the wild. Days or weeks stretch between his visits but he has not forgotten where home is. After many months away, he turned up in January 2026, then again the next month.
