ME: “My paycheck has barely changed in two years.”

ME: “So when your expenses rise, I’m expected to pay more. When my expenses rise, that’s my problem?”
LANDLORD: “That’s how business works.”
ME: “How many rental properties do you own again?”
LANDLORD: “Six. Why?”
ME: “Just trying to understand why I’m responsible for protecting your income when nobody’s protecting mine.”
LANDLORD: “Rent is due on the first.”

The landlord can spread rising costs across multiple properties, build equity, and potentially benefit from appreciation. The tenant gets a higher bill and has to figure out how to make the same paycheck stretch further.
