I maintain that design largely died in the 1940s. Take a look at a Bakelite barometer from the 1930s, and weep at what has become of consumer goods.
Before bullet trains, there was this. Duchess of Hamilton, 1938. Peak British brilliance. Art Deco on rails ❤️

Watching some zombie series made in Spain; this is the fourth film/series of Spanish origin I've seen in the past year. All four have lush cinematography, lotta beautiful people, decent dialogue and a linear storyline. Nicely done. #amazon #Spain #film

Cincinnati friends! I'm on the road this weekend, signing beautiful Backyard Starship hardcovers at Barnes and Noble in the Kenwood Collection, Saturday from 2-4PM. Stop by and say hello; it's an amazing store. #authorevents #books stores.barnesandnoble.com/st…

This year, I created about 800 pounds of "Black Gold". Compost. It's like a turbo for your garden. We went from four gardens that were. . . okay. . .if you beat the deer to it-- To a massive wave of food, augmented by Black Gold and protected by a six foot fence. The recipe is simple. Coffee grounds, tater peels, and melon rinds. That's it. the results are a beautiful dark, crumbly compost that looks and feels a bajillion times better than anything you might buy in a bag from one of the Big Box stores. #gardening #homestead

Things I learned this week: 1. Ham, chicken, and beef are easy to can, and you can season them differently to create a nice variety. 2. Taters can beautifully. They keep their color and texture. 3. Three rounds of canning each night means in ten days, you can put up six months of food. 4. No matter what, you WILL need more jars. Always. #homestead #canning

Watching Life Force and it has to be said: Frank Finlay's hair is MAGNIFICENT. It is art unto itself. It is the zenith of follicular evolution, and it deserves our accolades.

With the passing of such a giant, Sir Patrick Stewart, I am moved to once again share one of his early films. People mistakenly use the term "B Movie" when discussing the sheer majesty and wonder of. . . LIFE FORCE. This 1985 tour de force featured Sir Patrick, Steve Railsback, Peter Firth, and a bevy of bewildered British stage actors, and the incandescently beautiful-- and completely naked, for the whole film-- Mathilda May. When American astronauts journey to Halley's Comet, they encounter three alien beings in suspended animation. Naturally, the three aliens are stunningly beautiful, and naturally, they are naked. OF COURSE THEY BRING THEM BACK TO LONDON. Unleashed on the human populace, the Space Vampires (they were named that by author Colin Wilson in his novel, um. . .The Space Vampires) begin a reign of terror, draining the life force of humans through sexual contact (OF COURSE) and creating a horde of life-thirsty zombies who turn London, and the world, into a charnel house of desiccated bodies and spectacular tits. Sending the ill-gotten life force skyward through a focusing lens, the space vampires recharge their ship, using people as batteries for their continuing onslaught of sexy mayhem. But love is eternal, just like the sex appeal of Mathilda May and her Star Booty. Forced to choose between his home and a life of depraved, mind-bending sexual domination, Commander Carlsen (Railsback) howls "Ad astra et mamillae!" and takes One Giant Leap For Dudes Who Love Bewbs. Naturally. It is, without a doubt, one of the finest "bad" films ever made. Treat yourself tonight, and tip one for Sir Patrick as you do. youtu.be/B18wv1oAJGc

My grandfather was a big band leader in New York; under Patton he went all the way to Germany. Came back and opened a pie restaurant in Rome, NY.
America after WW2 was fucking crazy, like you find some 23yo who had to rip a guy's trachea out with his fingers on Guadalcanal and you just hand him an apron and big goofy glasses and say "Ok, youre the hardware store guy now, have fun, sell some Carpenters pencils, be normal".
