I've been developing for years and posted almost none of it. Part of it is never really knowing what the point of posting was.
Here's the point I landed on: I pay monthly for apps that are supposed to help me sleep, move and eat well. That's a strange arrangement. So I started building my own instead. Free ones.
I'm going to show some of the work here.
Dendritic drainage on the Colorado Plateau, USA. From the Greek dendron, tree. The branches never reached for the water, the water cut the branches. Geologists drew that shape from ground survey long before anyone looked down on it.
The Eye of the Sahara. A 40 km eroded dome in Mauritania: magma lifted the rock, wind and sand carved the rings.
Captured in Terra from Sentinel-2 cloudless. 21.1°N 11.5°W
Thanks EOX. Next: the Sun, in HelioViewer.
Zoom goes all the way down now. Can you guess where this is?
New in Terra:: Base imagery is Sentinel-2 cloudless by EOX, plus Blue Marble and Black Marble from NASA.
Where would you explore first?
The imagery is a cloudless composite from EOX 2025. It does not tell you how it looks today, but option to cycle back to 2016 is optional. Would ±9 years, give decent coverage for Terra.
The live layers on top are USGS, EMSC, NASA EONET and NOAA SWPC.

If you want to go back in time to see significant earthquakes relative to objects like moon, sun and planets. 'Go to this moment in time'. Now with updated earthquake indicators for better readability. How do you like the new indicator with accessibility options?
Magnitude is depicted with the size of the ring and the beams. Their colour tells you the depth of each Earthquake.
The colour is also visible in the labels displaying the Magnitude level. By selecting or hovering them shows you more data and options.
New Earthquake Indicators are now live terra.terryelemans.nl and open-source repo.
M2.2 Solar Flare, 06:34 UTC, nine minutes.
This is a close-up of the Sun, it is a picture trough AIA 171. It only sees temperature and specifically iron, which glows at around a million degrees. Every loop here is plasma riding sun's magnetic lines that happens to be that hot.
Proof of concept coming to life.
Terra currently stops at a fixed zoom to keep the 8K Blue Marble from falling apart.
Soon that texture becomes fallback only, you can push to city level. Rivers and highways appear. Your house doesn’t.
Terra is also working perfectly on mobile. Create the scene how you like with the layers options, your preferences will be stored on your local device.
Also explore outside of earth to watch the Magnetosphere, Sun and Space.
New earthquake indicator, still experimental. Depth is the hard part. At globe scale 18 km is nothing, so it has to be encoded rather than drawn. If you write shaders: how would you show it?
Polar cap edge: 78°? N, 72°? S, ±6°.
That ± is not a measurement error, it is the gap to the next seeded latitude. I print the larger of the two neighbours, because that is the distance over which the edge could have slipped past unseen.
Magnetosphere is live in Terra now.

IGRF-14, T89c, Shue 98. Solar wind and Kp from NOAA SWPC, GOES for the measured side. That GOES sample is 4 minutes old.
The model currently only operates in the nowcast. Forecast still being developed.
Navigate (bottom right) > Magnetosphere view
Aurora nowcast is live on the globe. Right now it puts the chance of visible aurora over Canada at 29%.
This is the one layer I cannot scrub back through. Everything else here is either computed or archived. A nowcast only exists now.
Two views of the same data, schematic and realistic.

Working on the Magnetosphere for a while now. it's undergoing self-containing test to validate forecasts against live data when they arrive.
I like to add forecast in the 'Terra' Model, but only well supported and motivated. The Nowcast is directly pulled from SWPC.
