From the one-room schoolhouses of Roane County, West Virginia, Ruby Bradley traded her chalkboard for a uniformβ€”and became a legend. Born near Spencer in 1907, she taught school before becoming a nurse and joining the Army Nurse Corps in 1934. Captured in WWII Philippines, she spent 3 years as a POW, assisting in surgeries, delivering babies, and smuggling food to starving childrenβ€”earning the nickname "Angel in Fatigues." She emerged weighing just 86 lbs but never stopped serving. In Korea, she saved lives under fire. Retired as Colonel in 1963 with 34 decorationsβ€”the most decorated woman in U.S. military history. A true Mountain State hero.

πŸ“œ Vehicle From History: Tiger I The Tiger I, introduced in 1942, was one of the most feared tanks of World War II. Its biggest strength was the 88 mm gun, capable of piercing armor from long distances. On the battlefield, it created both psychological and technical dominance.

When Jane Kendeigh touched down on Iwo Jima on March 6, 1945, she became the first Navy flight nurse in an active combat zone. Jane was just 22 years old, and had volunteered for the dangerous assignment. "Send me into combat," she told her superiors. "I want to help our boys when they need it." During the battle of Iwo Jima, Kendeigh and other nurses would help evacuate 2,300 sailors and Marines, the largest such evacuation at that time. After Iwo, Navy brass sent Jane back to the states to capitalize on her newfound celebrity status in selling war bonds. After a few weeks, she pleaded to go back to the Pacific. "I need to be with my boys," she told them.
