ALT JOINT GENOME INSTITUTE Strategic Plan: AI-Driven Genomics to Accelerate Biological Discovery Our goal is to make it easier for users to move from experiments to scientific discovery. By bringing together complementary technologies, expertise and facilities across DOE, we can enable new types of science and help researchers address increasingly complex questions that are central to the DOE mission. Big congratulations to our former collaborator Georg Nagel! Thoroughly deserved. 👏 Great for plant and algal research. @Gao_SQ continues to collaborate with us on #diatom rhodopsins. 👏
Georg Nagel – awarded this year’s medicine prize – was born in 1953.
He received his Ph.D. from the University of Frankfurt, Germany. He is currently professor of molecular plant physiology at the Department for Molecular Plant Physiology and Biophysics - Botany I, University of Würzburg, Germany.

Our new co-led work with Guang Gao @NatureComms shows that abrupt pH-shifts to estimate the response of #diatoms to ocean acidification lead to different evolutionary outcomes with consequences for diatom productivity and biogeochemical cycles.

New study from our lab, out now in Nature Biotechnology: Genome-resolved metagenomics and single-cell genomics have yielded millions of microbial genomes. Could a large fraction of these uncultivated bacteria and archaea be symbionts? We identified genomic signatures of host dependence across global metagenomic data, suggesting that 15–23% may live in symbiosis. The resulting SymGs catalog and our symclatron software provide new resources for studying and engineering host–microbe interactions. nature.com/articles/s41587-0…

Antarctic sea ice RNA viruses show lower Ka/Ks values than viruses from under-ice seawater, consistent with stronger purifying selection in the ice habitat. Across 11 metatranscriptomes, Cryppavirales and Picornavirales were the most abundant orders, while Lenarviricota was concentrated in ice rather than seawater. Over half of the viral OTUs were assigned to hosts, mostly fungi and algae, so much of this community may infect eukaryotes living within the ice matrix. doi.org/10.1128/aem.01472-26
