Corliss Trojans 18
Champaign Centennial Chargers 7
#4 WR Cayzon McGruder
#1 QB Jayce Triggs - 3 rushing TDs
#5 RB Demonte Redmond
#2 RB Ka'mane Key
Even after an 18-7 victory, Corliss head coach Keith Brookshire wasn't satisfied with his team's performance. In his eyes, the issues started long before kickoff, with what he described to The Bigs as "a terrible week of practice."
Senior quarterback, safety and special teams standout Jayce Triggs echoed his coach's sentiments. But with the season on the line, the Trojans found a way to get the job done.
"Even though we had a terrible week of practice, I didn't want the season to end and this to be my last game. So every snap, just work hard, do whatever you can between these lines and we came out with the win," Triggs said after Corliss defeated the Champaign Centennial Chargers 18-7 in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
A 35-yard reception by junior Cayzon McGruder set up Triggs' 5- yard TD run, giving Corliss a 6-0 leadearly in the second quarter.
Centennial responded as junior quarterback Shameer Clark's 18-yard TD run gave the Chargers a 7-6 lead headng into the half.
Corliss locked in defensively after the break, keeping Centennial out of the end zone for the last 24 minutes of play. Offensively, the Trojans leaned on junior Ka'mane Key and senior Demonte Redmond with a physical ground attack that wore the Chargers defense down.
Triggs added a 1- yard TD run in the third quarter to put Corliss back in front 12-7, then he found the end zone again late in the fourth to put the game away and send the Trojans to the next round.
For Triggs, playing QB, safety and special teams is demanding physically and mentally. He didn't hesitate when asked which side of the challenge is tougher.
"Both. It takes a lot of energy but every time I get tired, coach Brookshire tells me all-state players don't get tired so it keeps motivating me to play harder."
That mindset will be crucial as Corliss moves on to the first round where they will travel to face the 7-2 Crete-Monee Warriors next Friday. – at Chicago, IL
An extra point is the difference as #24 Champaign Centennial is sniffing upset over #9 Corliss as they take a 7-6 lead into the half in the opening round of the class 5A Playoffs. #TheBigsPrepGameOfTheWeek – at Chicago, IL
