Tropical Storm Rachel battered Southern California, bringing severe storm surges and heavy coastal flooding to communities like Long Beach and Newport Beach. Unusually high tides combined with large swells to overwhelm shorelines, pushing seawater directly into coastal streets and neighborhoods. As local crews scrambled to deploy sand berms and water pumps to mitigate the flooding, the system also caused significant beach erosion and hazardous surf conditions across the region.

With Hurricane Isaias hitting before tonight's Alabama-Georgia game, Alabama's SubAir system will be tested. Alabama installed the system beneath its football field as part of a multi-million-dollar renovation project. Fourteen wireless underground sensors monitor conditions like moisture, temperature, and oxygen. The system then pulls moisture out through a drainage system when the field gets too wet. The company that installed the system says it can do an hour's worth of drainage in about three minutes. The system also has built-in temperature controls with an underground heating system, allowing Alabama to heat up the field when it gets cold. This is the same system used at Augusta National, and it paid off when Alabama received half an inch of rain before its 2023 home opener. The SubAir system automatically kicked on, and in just 17 minutes, the moisture level dropped from 25% to 16% — the exact level Alabama likes to play all its football games at. Pretty cool!

#Isaias 4pm CT update: A life-threatening storm surge is expected from the Mouth of the Mississippi River to Suwannee, Florida. Residents under evacuation orders should leave immediately and follow advice from local officials. Extremely dangerous and damaging hurricane force-winds are expected over portions of the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi where a Hurricane Warning is in effect. Residents in these areas should have a safe room to ride out the storm and prepare for long-duration power outages. Damaging wind gusts are likely over a large portion of the southeastern United States from western and northern Georgia and the southern Appalachians, westward over much of central and northern Alabama, southern middle Tennessee, and Mississippi, especially in areas of higher terrain. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, avoid driving high-profile vehicles, prepare for power outages, and be aware of the potential for falling trees. Isaias will bring areas of heavy rainfall to the central U.S. Gulf coast and much of the Southeast through the weekend. Considerable flash and urban flooding, along with significant river flooding, will be possible. Landslides are also possible across the Southern Appalachians. The tornado potential will continue through tonight. The greatest risk will be east of the center, particularly across the Florida Panhandle into southern Georgia. This risk will continue spreading north-northeast across parts of the Southeast on Saturday. hurricanes.gov
