I truly believe people are purposely misconstruing what Gunn said so they can have some kind of bias to go after him on that basis, which is clearly unfounded. What Gunn means is that a universe like Star Wars and Game of Thrones have completely living worlds and active stories going on concurrently while at the same time (like comics) there are some that will build towards a bigger over arching narrative and some that will exist as companion pieces that will reward the viewer and will further enrich their experience watching the 'universe' as a whole without needing to rely on every project to show them where to start just like comics; form fresh runs to limited runs or elseworlds. People really want to hear their own confirmation biases. "I think it's the reason I agreed to the job. You talk about George R.R. Martin, and he is really one of the guys who I love and look up to. I'm an enormous fan of his and people say, 'Oh, the DCU is doing what MCU is.' But I think it really is a lot more to me what the Game of Thrones world is like or what Star Wars is like, because we're building a universe and then picking out little pieces of it and telling individual stories from that universe."
