One year ago, we convened a high-level national multi-stakeholder dialogue on Ghana’s illegal mining crisis. It ended with a communiqué signed by 22 institutions and stakeholder groups, calling for decisive and coordinated national action. The dialogue reflected a growing recognition that ending galamsey takes more than technical fixes. It requires sustained enforcement, political will, social consensus and civic vigilance.

One year on, we tracked ten of the communiqué’s key recommendations. L.I. 2462 has been repealed, and a national gold traceability system is under way. Eight others still await action.

“Any institution named in an audit or procurement finding should face a legal duty to respond publicly within a fixed window, sixty or ninety days, for instance, with a named individual and a date attached. Silence beyond that window should itself be a reportable fact, not something that simply dissolves into the record.” Excerpt from keynote address by Richard Ellimah, Chairman, Public Interest and Accountability Committee (@PIACGhana), at the ongoing Media and Stakeholder Accountability Forum @oxfaminghana

“Ghana does not lack evidence of what is going wrong in how public money is procured, spent and accounted for. What we have not reliably built is the mechanism that turns that evidence into consequence as a matter of routine, rather than as exceptional political will in an exceptional year.” ---Excerpt from keynote address by Richard Ellimah, Chairman, Public Interest and Accountability Committee (@PIACGhana ), at the ongoing Media and Stakeholder Accountability Forum @oxfaminghana

“Policymakers should view evidence not as a threat, but as an opportunity to learn, improve, and rebuild public trust.” ---Remarks by Mohammed Mahamud, Programme Manager, Accountable Governance Programme and Policy, OXFAM in Ghana @oxfaminghana at the ongoing Media and Stakeholder Accountability Forum @PIACGhana
